Magical beanie cap puts animated 3D masks over your face

To be the indisputable life of the party, you need more than a fancy augmented reality shirt. Sure your friends can play games on it, but it can't turn you into a werewolf, an alien, a zombie, or a TV head like this beanie cap can.

The cap, called Zaphat, was designed by Zappar, the company that also came up with the aforementioned augmented reality shirt. All your friends need to do is look at the cap through the screen of a tablet or smartphone that's loaded with the Zappar app (download Zappar for iPhone and iPad or Android) to see you transform into something more amusing or more sinister.

There's no word yet on when the Zaphat will be released, but it will be available from retailers as well as from Zappar's online store.

Transparent, thin and tough: Why don't insect wings break?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Researchers from Trinity College Dublin have shown that the wings of insects are not as fragile as they might look. A study just published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE now shows that the characteristic network of veins found in the wings of grasshoppers helps to capture cracks, similar to watertight compartments in a ship.

"The desert locusts are the marathon-flyers of the insect world," says Dr Jan-Henning Dirks, who studied the properties of the wings together with Professor David Taylor at the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. "These grasshoppers can fly for days across deserts and oceans with wings ten times thinner than a human hair."

During these long journeys the wings of the grasshoppers have to withstand hundreds of thousands of wing beats without failure. What is their secret?

Like all insect body parts, the wings are made from cuticle, which is the second most common natural material in the world. "We recently showed that the cuticle of the grasshopper legs is one of the toughest natural materials in the world," says Taylor. "Now we wanted to know whether this is true for the locust wings, too." To measure the toughness of the wings, the team cut small notches into the wing's membrane and measured the force needed to drive the crack through the wing "We were quite surprised when our first experiments showed that the membrane of the wings alone was not very tough." said Dirks. "We were expecting the membrane to be at least as tough as the legs."

However, when Dirks and Taylor then looked at the videos they recorded, they found that most cracks were effectively stopped once they ran into a cross vein. These minute crack barriers increased the wing's toughness by 50%. So if these veins are so good in stopping cracks, why not have more of them?

"Compared to the thin wing membrane, the wing veins are relatively heavy. Therefore you want as few veins as possible to keep the weight of the wing low," said Dirks. However, as the videos demonstrate, with fewer veins in the wing there's less protection against cracks. "It's like the watertight compartments in a ship. With too many compartments, the ship gets too heavy. With too few, a single hole can sink the entire ship."

To answer the question What is the optimum ratio of the membrane and the veins? The researchers studied the characteristic pattern of the wings in detail and measured the size and shape of the almost 1000 vein "cells" found in each wing. Using fracture mechanics, Dirks and Taylor then showed that the spacing of most wing veins matches the membrane's so called "critical crack length." At a given stress, cracks smaller than this material constant do not grow. "Thanks to this precise spacing of the cross veins, the cracks are always stopped before they can reach this critical length and start growing themselves. " says Taylor "Nature has found a mechanically 'optimal' solution for the locust wings, with a high toughness and a low weight."

The researchers believe that the vein pattern found in insect wings thus might inspire the design of more durable and lightweight artificial 'venous' wings for micro-air-vehicles. And by "reversing" their analysis, one could possibly even use the vein spacing of fossil insects to study the wing properties of extinct insect species.

St. Jude defibrillator leads still problematic: study

(Reuters) - Changes that St. Jude Medical Inc made to its heart defibrillator leads do not protect against insulation defects that could potentially lead to device failure and death, according to a report published online on Tuesday in the medical journal Europace.

The report, by prominent cardiologist Robert Hauser of the Minneapolis Heart Institute, found that St. Jude's Riata ST Optim and its newer Durata ICD leads had sometimes failed due to insulation problems.

Leads transmit electricity to the heart from the implantable defibrillator, which is designed to deliver a life-saving shock if it detects a dangerous cardiac rhythm.

Hauser's report concluded that his findings were "new and unexpected." Additional studies are needed to determine the incidence of these failures and their clinical implications, the report said.

Still, the report, which was expected by investors, did not reveal as many problems as some had anticipated, and St. Jude's shares rose as much as 1.8 percent in Tuesday trading but later trimmed those gains to be barely higher.

"The good news is that the anticipation of this article is behind us and although not a glowing report (frankly, it never was going to be) it is not horrible, in our opinion," said Joanne K. Wuensch, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets, in a research report.

St. Jude's shares have been depressed for months amid concerns the newer models might also have to be withdrawn.

Last week, the FDA said the Durata leads should be the subject of surveillance studies, sending the company's shares down more than 4 percent.

The newer leads are coated with a material that St. Jude hoped would reduce the risk of insulation abrasions. According to Hauser, that may not be the case.

"The results of this study suggest that Optim, a proprietary copolymer of silicone and polyurethane, does not prevent critical insulation failures in Riata ST Optim and Durata leads that are caused by friction with the can or another device," he said.

Of equal concern, he said, is the fact that these failures occurred in leads that had only been implanted for four years or less.

St. Jude said in a statement: "We have only just accessed the online manuscript and are reviewing the information. We welcome ongoing discussion and research about the performance of our products, and believe it is important to consider all of the available information to understand the clinical performance of a device. To date, the accumulation of data continues to support the overall safety and reliability of our Durata leads."

Last year St. Jude recalled its older-model Riata defibrillator leads amid reports that the silicone coating around the wires eroded at a higher-than-expected rate.

An article by Hauser published in medical journal HeartRhythm linked the leads to 20 patient deaths.

DEFECTS AND DEATH

Hauser and his team searched a database held by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which records adverse events associated with a medical device.

The search returned 15 reports for the Riata ST Optim and 37 reports for the Durata leads, which were submitted by St. Jude based on its analyses of returned leads related to clinical events that occurred between December 2007 and January 2012.

Four abrasions associated with the Riata ST Optim lead resulted in high-voltage failures and one death. There were no deaths associated with the Durata lead.

Hauser said most of the insulation defects were outside-in abrasions, or those caused by contact with another device or part of the body. The Optim coating did not provide the abrasion resistance for which it is intended, he said.

However, he said one Riata ST Optim lead failure and three Durata lead failures were internal abrasions, which appear to be similar to the type of abrasions that were reported with the older, withdrawn leads.

St. Jude said in June that an internal investigation showed that damage to one of its Durata defibrillator leads was not caused by the same type of abrasion which forced the recall of the Riata products.

St. Jude said that data from its own surveillance indicates that "the overall performance and high reliability of the Durata lead is comparable to other defibrillation leads on the market."

St. Jude's shares were up five cents, or 0.1 percent, to $38.22 in late morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Earlier they rose as high as $38.87.

New Belarus foreign minister named

MINSK, Belarus (AP) ? Belarus' authoritarian president has named a new foreign minister in what is being seen as an effort to improve relations with the European Union and United States.

Vladimir Makei, the head of the presidential administration, replaces Sergei Martynov, who had been foreign minister for nine years.

Political analysts saw Monday's appointment as an overture to the West from President Alexander Lukashenko.

The EU has imposed punitive sanctions on Belarus over human rights abuses. Relations soured further this month when Lukashenko's government effectively expelled Sweden's ambassador after he met with opposition activists.

Makei, however, is also on the list of 243 Belarusians targeted by EU travel bans and asset freezes.

Global Internet Business Careers:non Earnings Careers To Consider

?

No Comments Many individuals engage in business because it is a necessity.

Everyone needs money to function and obtain the things they want. While this is almost universal for everyone, the types of businesses we engage in have more varied motivations. For some, private enterprise is the only way to go.

These people are usually in it because of a passion for a particular industry, or the deep desire to make a profit by engaging in businesses with a higher probability of return. Others on the other hand seek public employment. This group prefers to work for the government as a means to either start a political career or help change the community by working from within the system. The third group, are those who work for non-profit organizations.

They differentiate themselves from the two other industries, by not making profit the ultimate goal and by working outside the government rather than under it.

Issues like poverty, labor disputes, health care and the like are their usual topics. While these organizations tend to be small and the budgets scarce, people who work for these groups receive excellent training as they are made to multi-task and take on responsibilities they would not normally have in more defined corporate structures. It is for this reason that this is a popular training ground for fresh graduates and young men who are looking for ways to get more practical training.

One of the inherent advantages of working for non-profit jobs is that there are plenty of organizations that are actually based internationally. For idealistic individuals with a rich sense of adventure therefore, this could be the one for you. Recent data shows that the non-profit industry is among the 20 top growing fields in business. For those that are considering a career in this field, you dont necessarily have to love like a pauper to do some good.
