Is math real? - Boing Boing

Here's a great video pondering the objective reality of mathematics, and running down all the different schools of thought on where mathematical truth comes from -- does it exist outside of systems of codification by intelligent beings, as an eternal part of the universe; or is it something that we invent through codification?

Is Math a Feature of the Universe or a Feature of Human Creation? | Idea Channel | PBS (Thanks, Dad!)

Source: http://boingboing.net/2013/06/22/is-math-real.html

Aly Raisman Oscar Results Jennifer Lawrence Fall Ang Lee les miserables jennifer lawrence Oscar Winners 2013

Posted by linthicumjeromy59 at 5:13 PM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6892267541144726133&postID=3824084923844340361&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); The works ranged from soaring, meticulous Song-style landscapes to confrontational abstractions achieved with the single thrust of a large, wet brush. But the show had less to do with traditional, scholarly self-effacement or Modernist iconoclasm, and more to do with acts of personal expression.

For example, color is used in non-traditional ways in Li Huayi?s Whispering Pine, Reaching to the Clouds (2012), a vast white-to-grey mountain landscape depicted from a vertiginous angle, with the twisting pine of the title ?colorized.? Whereas the tree executed in blacks and grey would naturally attract the eye, the addition of color adds a touch of surprise to the work, much louder than a whisper.

Color was not used in the dense, convoluted, near-terrifying landscapes of Tai Xiangzhou. Tai?s lengthy calligraphic colophons, in skillful regular script, demonstrate the artist?s respect for his classical heritage. At the other extreme, color bursts across the comical expressionist works of Li Jin, with their overt social criticism.

Abstraction in a traditional mode might describe the works of American born Arnold Chang?in which elements familiar in Chinese landscape painting appear to be distorted and displaced in a fresh and modern way?yet his scrolls still bear the stamp of the refined scholar-intellectual. Similarly, Liu Dan?s large?Silent Mountains, Meandering Paths?(2013) delights and disarms the eye with its ambiguous confusion and blending of clouds and mountains.

Scholarly fondness for the grotesque is stretched to the limits by Zeng Xiaojun, whose?Wild Spirit Screen?(2012) is a haunting depiction of a psychedelic, surrealistic plant form?an uprooted tree of sorts with stark intertwined branches, odd root systems, unnatural growths and spooky crevices. Call it Chinese Gothic, if you please.

In technical terms, the collages by the Master of the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat, are unique in this exhibition in a couple of ways. First, the inscriptions are in English, the native language of the British artist. Second, the subject matter?or more precisely, the ink on the paper?is applied in the form of collage. The Master first paints traditional landscape elements on ?cloud-dragon paper? and then cuts out sections of this material to paste on the finished work. The trompe l?oeil effect is entirely convincing. In?The Eight Sainted Staves?(2012), eight separate scrolls each depict a walking stick accompanied by a long text in a faux-literary Chinese style about the artist?s encounter with the ?Chisel-Immortal,? the artisan to whom the artist attributes the creation of the staves. With (British) tongue firmly in (Chinese) cheek, these works raise intriguing questions about Chinese art and identity.

?Water Ink,? one of Sotheby?s first selling exhibitions of Asian art, set off a small controversy over the issue of a major auction house stepping on the toes of individual galleries and dealers with fewer resources. But there are more factors than the obvious commercial ones at play here, and it is hoped that the incident will remain a storm in an inkpot.

Source: http://artasiapacific.com/Magazine/WebExclusives/ChineseContemporaryInkPaintingsShuimoWaterInk

mila kunis hugo chavez jamie lynn spears Chavez Dead Hugo Chavez Dead Bonnie Franklin sinkhole

Posted by linthicumjeromy59 at 12:14 AM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6892267541144726133&postID=7195073543537216918&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); but I disagree with what is done in response to it: Retirement, drugs and surgery.

When reading Greg's article, you may have noted that the only athlete (Hayden Roulston)?who elected not to go down the conventional medical path is the only one to have fully recovered and has gone on to greater performances than ever and continues to do so today.? All others referred to in the article have retired?with varying degrees of ill health or limitations on activity.
It is a shame that Greg and the medical experts involved in these case did not inquire more into what those "alternatives" Roulston partook of that brought about such a miraculous and lasting recovery.

(In case you are wondering: Yes, I have talked to Hayden about what he did to restore his health - but what he actually did is his to tell).

Why are non-medical solutions consistently ?ignored?

Is there a taboo within mainstream medicine to even suggest, let alone admit, that there are effective alternatives to the allopathic medical paradigm which is to attack a health problem by administering patent poisons or maiming with the scalpel? ?Is it because there are really cheap, non-patentable naturally occurring substances and procedures that can cure! ?Is it because non-patent natural products have the potential to undermine the multi-billion dollar industry that has built up around high tech patent medicines and expensive surgical procedures?
Some years ago, I attended a lecture by a cardiologist who, among other things, made mention of Rob Waddell's heart problems.? I was horrified at what he described was in prospect for Waddell in the way of surgery and which he has subsequently undergone in some form.? What should have been asked was this:

"Why did Waddell's heart problems apparently diminish when he switched from rowing to grinding and why did they reappear when he switched back to rowing???

Surely there are better alternatives to barbaric and life-threatening surgery which is, essentially, slicing and/or?scraping the surface of the heart muscle to create scars!? More about this later.
It is not unusual for extreme athletes to have heart rates as low as the 30-40 beats per minute range.? In fact it is a source of pride among athletes to have the lower the better!? But this is far from healthy and more an indication of chronic exhaustion, more commonly known as Adrenal Fatigue.? Blown out adrenals is near universal in endurance sports such as triathlon, running, rowing and cycling.? In fact, I am currently touring New Zealand and Australia, running a one day course for health professionals about adrenal and thyroid burnout in athletes.

Incidentally, the last course was in Brisbane last weekend, attended by 70 enthusiastic health professionals. ?The feedback has been sensational and there are more than 100 enrolled for this weekend's course in Melbourne:
http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/06/feedback-on-running-on-empty-courses-is.html?utm_source=BP_recent
Sadly, few doctors have been in attendance. ?This has to change, or else the medical profession will fall further and further behind and remain dependent on drugs and surgery when treating this most treatable of conditions.

Think about it:? When a person collapses with shock and their heart stops beating, resuscitation may include

injecting adrenalin into the heart in a desperate attempt to kick start it.? Olympic athletes such as Mo Farah and Galen Rupp have been resorting to injections of adrenalin and thyroxine to power their athletic performances.? Adrenalin is produced by the adrenal glands; thyroxine is produced by the thyroid. The fact is this: ?Strong adrenal and thyroid glands power the cardiovascular system, including the heart.? One of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue is unusually low blood pressure and an unusually low resting pulse, that is often erratic.? If the adrenals give up the ghost completely, the heart stops and the person dies.? This is presumably the cause of death of the first person to run the marathon:?Pheidippides!
Bradycardia (unusually slow pulse), tachycardia (racing pulse) and heart arrhythmias (irregular/flutter pulse) are strongly associated with adrenal fatigue which, as I mentioned earlier, is near universal in endurance athletes. In fact, it is common in any group of people who experience unrelenting stress. ?Especially when combined with the nutrient depleted diet.

My personal experience with adrenal-related heart problems

One of my last real running races was as a member of the Victoria University team contesting the NZ Veterans Cross-country Relay Championships.? I was about 42 years old then.? We were in the lead by the time the baton was handed to me.? I took off, setting a winning pace; but, at about the half way mark, I suddenly slowed.? My legs were dead and I felt I was going to die!? I staggered to the finish, having given up the lead.? I felt terrible and I had let the team down. ?I was heart-broken. ?Our team leader was most unimpressed.? I did not run competitively again until well into my 50's, mainly because I could not get beyond a staggering trot.
I was suffering a chronic?irregular heart beat.? In the lab my maximum pulse peaked at a miserable 109 beats
per minute and my 24 hour cortisol levels had dropped to nearly zero (cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands).? I was consulting a cardiologist and my doctor wanted to place me on steroid (Prednisone) medication.? I chose, instead, to begin a conservative programme of nutrition balancing and rest.
Today I am a new man: I?have not had an irregular pulse for years, my resting pulse is a healthy 50-60 beats per minute (not too low)?and my heart red lines at about 175 beats per minute - not bad for a 60 year old, if you don't mind my saying!
It took a good ten years to get to where I am at; but the journey?has been well worth the effort!

The evidence is clear:?I have reversed what was progressing to outright heart disease that would ultimately kill me!? The evidence is clear in terms of blood tests, blood pressure and heart response to exercise.? Further evidence is via the stop watch: I am a full 20% faster over a two hour cycling race as compared to when I was in my 40's. This is sensational news; but it has not warranted any attention at all, other from the few people who read this blog.

Read this:
http://blog.garymoller.com/2011/07/more-about-reversing-cardiovascular.html
As with Hayden Roulston's remarkable recovery, as compared to the others, when it comes to health, mainstream media and mainstream medicine are completely blind to the obvious when it comes to the truth about what works and what does not.
For most people:?

"Oh dear, I have heart disease: Better?do what the Good Doc says;?take?his poisonous drugs, have the surgery and resign myself to a lesser life and a sooner death".

Rob Waddell is an interesting case study.? Before proceeding to comment, I warn that I am making a number of assumptions based on?comments?by the cardiologist during his lecture, and my assumptions about dietary variations typically seen in endurance athletes and athletes who are bulking up.? The diets can be very different and it is in these differences that we may discover the key to prevention and recovery form an irregular heart beat.?

An endurance athlete's diet is typically high in carbohydrates, while being relatively low in fats and proteins.? The proportion of vitamins and minerals to energy is usually very, very poor. ?When tested, an athlete on this kind of endurance diet is depleted. ?Here is a good example:
http://blog.garymoller.com/2012/01/running-on-empty-why-athletes.html

An athlete who is bulking up for the role of grinder on a yacht will typically be consuming much more protein and fat while, by default, the intake of vitamins and minerals is proportionally much higher in relation to calories.? I understand that the Team NZ crew are generously fed with food of the highest quality.

I believe this nutritional shift, combined with the adrenal and thyroid burnout associated with endurance sport, is the key to the apparent reduction in heart problems when Waddell switched from rower to grinder and why the symptoms came back when he switched back to rowing once again. ?I will assume he resumed rowing by adopting a restrictive diet to shed the bulk he was carrying while working as a grinder.

Of course, grinding has a huge cardiovascular component but not of the same unrelenting intensity? as experienced in rowing training and competition.

The widespread, uncontrolled use of NSAID anti-inflammatory medication in sport
?There is clear evidence of increased risk of heart flutter or atrial fibrillation with the use of anti-inflammatory medication.? Such medicines are dished out like lollies in sport, often by the coach who is supplied with endless amounts by their team's "Sports Doctor", or purchased from over-the-counter sources.
This article here gives you an idea of just how widespread is the use and abuse of these drugs in sport:
http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/06/a-kiwi-cyclist-has-admitted-to-using.html

In my opinion, there is no need for these drugs in sport: The potential health risks outweigh any dubious benefits.

Please read these articles:
http://blog.garymoller.com/2012/06/does-taking-anti-inflammatory-drugs.html

If an athlete, or anybody, for that matter, suffers from an irregular heart beat here is what I recommend:

Go see your doctor without hesitation
Get a thorough check up, get zapped with a defibrillator or whatever else is needed to ensure your immediate safety. ?This may include medication.
Get a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis completed right away
It takes about three weeks to get the results back. ?This test will give us a really good idea of what is going on with your adrenal and thyroid glands and the balance between minerals such as magnesium, calcium, copper and iron (A blood test does not do this!). ?We want to get this report asap so as to avoid the risk of becoming physiologically and psychologically depend on any medication (Time is a factor).
Here is the link to the test:
http://www.garymoller.com/Products/Products/H/Hair-Tissue-Mineral-Analysis-Profile-Two.aspx
Commence a programme of nutritional balancing
Guided by the Hair Test results. ?Nutrition supplementation without accurate testing to guide a person is a bit like target shooting while blind-folded.
Nutritional balancing is the key to restoring health, including strong cardiovascular function. ?It takes time but it is every bit worth the time and effort. ?Seldom does a programme of nutritional balancing fail to get a person into a state of health where medication is no longer necessary.

What do other health professionals think about this approach to health care, including nutritional balancing?
If the response to the current lecture tour of New Zealand and Australia is anything to go by....
http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/06/feedback-on-running-on-empty-courses-is.html?utm_source=BP_recent
How to prevent heart damage from "excessive" exercise

If the heart is deprived of critical nutrients - and it just needs to be one of hundreds of nutrients - such as magnesium, calcium, ubiquinol or d-ribose, to name just a few, then it will be at risk of damage. ?If there is an imbalance between calcium and zinc, for example (present in 80% of the athletes I test), there will be disastrous deposition of calcium in the heart and arteries (arteriosclerosis). ?If there is a lack of or excess of copper, cholesterol may soar, the heart may become floppy and the heart valves leaky. ?These can all be prevented and even reversed, if present, through a careful and patient process of nutritional balancing.
I am once again back to extremely intense exercise, red-lining the heart at 170 beats per minute on a regular basis. ?In doing so, I am not worried about all the growing evidence that this can be extremely harmful. ?The reason I do not worry is because I am carefully monitoring markers of cardiovascular health (Cholesterol is not one of them): Blood pressure, resting and exercising pulse, calcium/magnesium ratios and more. ?My cardiovascular health is maintained by supplying the nutritional building blocks a strong heart and flexible arteries require and I am carefully replacing the nutrients that are lost during intense exercise. This is guided by repeating the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis on an annual basis. ?
How do you know this works Gary?

Over several years of nutritional balancing my own cardiovascular work output has increased by at least 20% - All for no extra training! ?As they say: ?"Better than Lance!"

Source: http://blog.garymoller.com/2013/06/does-intense-exercise-damage-your-heart.html

Ray Manzarek Jodi Arias Zach Sobiech dancing with the stars miguel Ultra Music Festival london

Posted by linthicumjeromy59 at 10:14 PM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6892267541144726133&postID=3638962877044058447&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); It will be interesting to see if it shares the success of the H4N, since DSLR video is waning a bit with the introduction of dedicated video cameras like the Canon C100/300 and Sony FS100/700. This is not a place where America can go it alone," said David Solimini, a vice president at the Truman National Security Project think tank.

The Obama administration's possible military choices range from limited one-off missile strikes from ships - one of the less-complicated scenarios - to bolder operations like carving out no-fly safe zones.

White House officials on Thursday played down the prospects of a no-fly zone, citing the open-ended costs and uncertainty of such an operation in a place like Syria, with its well-defended air space. But they did not rule it out either.

The White House did, however, rule out the more politically unpalatable possibility of sending U.S. forces into the country.

A more likely move would be to begin providing lethal assistance to Syrian rebels. The White House said on Thursday it would increase support to the opposition Supreme Military Council, including military support, but it did not specify lethal aid.

A source close to the matter said on Thursday that Obama has authorized sending some U.S. weapons to Syrian rebels as part of a new package of military support. There was no word on the type of weaponry the United States would provide or when it would be delivered.

Obama had opposed limited steps like arming anti-government rebels, but pressure to deepen U.S. involvement in Syria's civil war after American intelligence agencies concluded Damascus used chemical weapons appears to have changed the calculation.

Obama last August pledged he would consider more significant aid to the rebels if Assad's regime crossed a "red line" by moving around or using sizeable amounts of chemical weapons.

Representative Ed Royce, chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Thursday: "It is now clear that the Assad regime has crossed a red line. ... I encourage the administration to begin in earnest arming the Free Syrian Army."

STRIKES, NO-FLY ZONE

One form of military intervention that could limit to some extent U.S. and allied involvement in Syria's war would be one-off strikes on pro-Assad forces or infrastructure tied to chemical weapons use. Given Syria's air defenses, planners may choose to fire missiles from ships at sea.

"The most proportional response (to limited chemical weapons use) would be a strike on the units responsible, whether artillery or airfields," Jeffrey White, a Middle East expert at the Washington Institute For Near East Policy, said recently.

"It would demonstrate to Assad that there is a cost to using these weapons. The problem so far is that there's been no cost to the regime from their actions."

It is not clear how the Syrian government would respond and if it would try to retaliate militarily against the U.S. forces in the region. U.S. military involvement would also upset Russia, which has a naval facility on Syria's Mediterranean coast.

Another option the Pentagon has examined involves the creation of humanitarian safe areas in support of Turkey and Jordan that would also be no-fly zones off limits to the Syrian air force - an option favored by lawmakers including Republican U.S. Senator John McCain.

That would involve taking down Syrian air defenses and destroying Syrian artillery from a certain distance beyond those zones, to protect them from incoming fire.

But officials, including Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, have warned that establishing safe zones would tie the United States more closely to Syria's messy conflict. Assad would almost certainly react.

The U.S. military has also completed planning for going into Syria and securing its chemical weapons under different scenarios, including one in which Assad falls from power and his forces disintegrate, leaving weapons sites vulnerable to pillaging.

But any eventual move to put U.S. boots on the ground in Syria remains a remote possibility.

(Reporting by David Alexander, Phil Stewart, and Peter Apps, with additional reporting by Matt Spetalnick; Steve King, a Republican from Iowa and the House's leading immigration hawk, complained Thursday about young immigrants who had shown up to protest his bill that would defund President Barack Obama's deferred action program.

King wrote on Twitter that "20 brazen self professed illegal aliens have invaded my DC office. Obama's lawless order gives them de facto immunity from U.S. law."

The congressman sponsored a measure to defund Obama's 2012 executive action that gave young unauthorized immigrants relief from deportation and a work permit if they attend or graduate high school and have no criminal record. The amendment to quash the program passed the Republican-controlled House last week, but is all but certain never to make it out of the Senate.

The Senate is currently debating a sweeping immigration reform bill that would legalize millions of immigrants, and the House's vote on deferred action was seen as a parting shot on the issue. King asked two of the main champions of the reform bill?Sen. Chuck Schumer and Sen. John McCain?to "guard" the door to his office in his plaintive tweets.

One of the leaders of the protest, Julieta Garibay, said the protesters?dressed in caps and gowns and carrying signs that said "future teacher," "future lawyer" and other professions?wanted to remind King that "we are here to contribute to the country we love."

"The House GOP has a choice: Will they stand with Steve King and his push to return to deporting Dreamers, or will they do the right thing and lead on immigration reform for our families?" Garibay said in a statement.

Source: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/rep-steve-king-illegal-aliens-invaded-office-210709687.html

spurs evelyn lozada Austin Mahone macrumors neil patrick harris E3 2013 Titanfall

Posted by linthicumjeromy59 at 7:37 PM No comments:
Email This<a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-blog' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=6892267541144726133&postID=3031892892376512323&target=blog' onclick='window.open(this.href, "_blank", "height=270,width=475"); Since both upcoming consoles support the latest graphics and heterogeneous computing technologies, they will make game developers create better games. Those games will eventually be ported to PCs.

It is not a secret that for many game developers personal computers are not a primary platform to develop for. Instead, they focus on game consoles for commercial reasons and only then port games to PCs. As a result, many games today still rely on DirectX 9-generation graphics technologies from the mid-2000s, the time when the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 were launched. While in many cases PC ports get somewhat better graphics, mainstream games developed with current-gen consoles in mind still look pale when compared to the best PC titles.

With Direct3D 11.1/OpenGL 4.3-capable?graphics engine and heterogeneous processing capabilities, the next-generation consoles ? Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 ? bring gaming to the whole new level. Moreover, they will now have the same level of capabilities as leading-edge PCs, which means the forthcoming ports will look much better on personal computers.

Screenshot from Watch_Dogs, a?Unisoft game coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year.

?I am glad the new consoles are here if for no other reason than to raise the bar. It is nothing but goodness for the PC. The PC will keep growing, but the consoles will give us that next bump. Developers can now build really awesome content that can then scale to the PC. To us, the consoles are great because they catch up from a features perspective,? said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of Nvidia, during the company?s press conference at E3, reports The Verge.

With the lowest-common denominator for game developers being a Direct3D 11.1-capable machine with heterogeneous computing capabilities, the new generation of games [for both consoles and PCs] will inevitably utilize the same capabilities. In several years? time both next-gen video game consoles will get completely outdated from technology perspective when compared to PCs. However, it is highly likely that both Microsoft and Sony will heavily utilize cloud computing to improve graphics and visual effects quality of next-generation games, which means that PC titles will also get more beautiful and demanding.

All-in-all, it looks like the new era of games promises not to be dull whatsoever.

Tags: Microsoft, Sony, AMD, Nvidia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Playstation, Xbox, Jaguar, Radeon, GCN, Fusion, Geforce
<plusone size="medium"/> Comments currently: 16
Discussion started: 06/12/13 09:38:06 PM
Latest comment: 06/13/13 11:22:27 AM
Expand all threads | Collapse all threads
[1-7]

1.?

OpenGL 4.3? It is because most game developers who work for game studios are 30 - 50 single men, who don't have enough sex, exercise and they might have a marine backround in the US armed forces. They think this is funny! Other population stratas are not present in the artists. Violent games represent the point of view of frustrated men. It is embarrassing when they defend some sort of free expression, when their pathology and post-traumatic stress disorder is clearly visible. There is no point to argue "I have the right to make as violent games as I can". Games used to be normal and fun too, before the console noobs took over the demand.

7.?

So when will nVidia develop a GPU that fully supports D3D11.1?
