MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Millions of people depend on the Internet every day and cyber criminals are counting on that, according to a Kansas State University cybersecurity expert.

"Hackers are performing cyber espionage by gathering information on companies, seeking out national secrets or starting cyber warfare by disabling critical infrastructure," said Xinming "Simon" Ou, associate professor of computing and information sciences.

To help counter the threat, the National Science Foundation has awarded $2.3 million to Kansas State University's department of computing and information sciences to provide scholarships to qualified students interested in becoming cybersecurity and information assurance professionals. A team of computing and information sciences faculty, including Ou, Gurdip Singh, Eugene Vasserman, John Hatcliff and Scott DeLoach, lead the scholarship program.

According to Ou, many systems society uses every day -- such as smartphones, online companies, media communications, transportation, electricity and hospital systems -- are highly dependent on a very fragile cyber infrastructure that, if hacked into, could be disastrous and shake people's sense of security like a cyber version of Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

"The nation is in dire need of people who are capable of handling the cybersecurity challenges we face," Ou said. "We are lagging behind in the number of experts we have versus the threats we see."

About 6 million attempts are made each day to hack into the U.S. Department of Defense's computers, Ou said. While safeguarding national secrets is a priority, experts also realize that disrupting physical infrastructure is a real possibility.

"It has been shown that by hacking into the computer systems controlling a power generator's turbine, it can set the turbine into high speed until self-destruction," Ou said. "And our power grid in the U.S. is pretty much accessible from anywhere in the world thanks to the Internet."

A newly developed course by the computing and information sciences department, Cyber Defense Basics, uses a contained off-the-grid cybersecurity lab for mock exercises. The lab allows instructors to test students' abilities to defend against cyber attacks without infecting systems outside the lab. It teaches students the basics of cyber defense and how to counterattack.

"The public may not be very aware of how vulnerable we are these days, but the government is," said Gurdip Singh, head of the department of computing and information sciences at Kansas State University. "There have been successful incidents where attackers from another part of the world were able to penetrate U.S. financial and government computer systems. That's why training the next generation to counter these attacks is so important. This scholarship program will be a wonderful opportunity for students interested in the field."

Scholarship applicants must be U.S. citizens and will be subjected to background checks. The scholarship package includes a $20,000-$30,000 stipend plus tuition and fees, as well as money for materials and professional development such as attending cybersecurity conferences and trainings. Scholarship recipients are obligated to serve a government agency in a cybersecurity and information assurance position for the equivalent number of years they received the scholarship.

"Cybersecurity is not a pure technical problem; it needs the whole society's attention and effort to address," Ou said.

###

The first scholarships will be awarded sometime in 2013. For more information, contact Ou at 785-532-6350 or xou@k-state.edu.

Nas Embraces Digital Age, Helps Co-Found Social Media Company ...

Nas

Although Nas may have begun his career in the early 90s, the 39-year-old Queensbridge rap veteran seems to have a handle on the digital age's fast moving trends. Younger listeners may not know Nas' earlier work before the days of social media, but his current work and involvement in that sphere has gotten their attention. Showing supreme self-awareness, the ?Life Is Good rapper penned an article for technology website TechCrunch?in where he explains his involvement with social media and how his new company, 12Society, will play a part in that vast landscape.

Nas has charted on the Billboard 200 list many times before, but he was especially appreciative of hitting #1 this July considering online piracy has plagued the music industry for well over a decade now.

?When piracy hit the entertainment industry, artists were distraught and began distrusting their own fan bases. In truth, it was a response borne from confusion rather than logic. The passion the fans had for what we were creating never went away; we just had to evolve to survive in the new digital world,? wrote Nas.

The typically reserved Nas has kept true to the theme of evolution, considering how much he opened up in a series of promotional radio interviews ahead of his eleventh studio album Life Is Good this year. He explained further the necessity of this.

?A huge aspect of that evolution is offering a glimpse into your lifestyle ? being more accessible. The power that Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram offer is immense. Being an artist today is not only about being creative in what you produce, but finding creative ways to show people what you're doing,? he added.

Speaking of that creativity, Nas is the co-founder of 12Society; joining star MLB pitcher Tim Lincecum, NBA big men Kevin Love and Blake Griffin, music/TV exec?Nick Cannon and retired NFL star Michael Strahan in an innovative effort to connect with their widely varied fan base. The high-concept site asks members to pay a monthly fee and a box of clothing and lifestyle items curated by the 12Society board, as it were, will get sent to the members. The items will reportedly retail at a much higher rate than the $39 monthly fee to join.

Check out Nas' interview in full over at Tech Crunch.

Product Review Hot Toys Sucker Punch MMS - Babydoll & Amber ...

There?s no doubt writer/producer/director Zack Snyder?s last film ? Sucker Punch ? was a mixed bag. Harshly criticized by some critics and defended reverently by some of Synder?s rabid fans, the film featured an oddly twisted, convoluted, and somewhat confusing storyline complimented by scantily clad beautiful women wielding guns and swords, gorgeous special effects, and a variety of genres including steam punk, fantasy, wuxia, and sci-fi.

All the complaints aside, Sucker Punch no doubt featured some of the most impressively detailed costume designs thus it?s no surprise Hot Toys jumped the license and brings to life two characters in 1/6th scale: Babydoll and Amber.

PACKAGING:

Both figures come packaged in a thin but durable window box with sleeve. The blue sleeve, which partially covers the window box and allows some of the main box?s tan colored graphics to be seen, features the film?s title, Sucker Punch, and ?A Zack Snyder Film? in script. What makes this box unique is how the sleeve is held in place. The sleeve is held in place by a garter belt which wraps around the box and must be unclasped to access the figure inside. This goes along with the characters' costuming and, while a seemingly small detail, it makes a substantial difference in the way it's received by fans and collectors. Honestly, this is one of the coolest and most original packages from Hot Toys in quite some time.

Inside, the figure is held in place by a molded clear plastic tray which ensures the figure and the numerous accessories remain in pristine condition until they?re opened and taken out for display. Overall, the packaging ? both the design and the function ? makes for a great display piece as well as a solid protector for the figure.

SCULPTING & PAINT APPLICATION

Both Babydoll and Amber feature beautiful facial sculpts based on the film?s actresses Emily Browning and Jamie Chung (respectively). Sculpted by Yulli, the Babydoll head features life-like skin and a neutral facial expression that?ll fit nearly ever pose. Babydoll features somewhat controversial rooted blonde hair, which is a favorite of some collectors and a bane to others. Personally, I like the look of rooted hair on well-made 1/6th scale figures; here it works well, with the hair parted and pulled back into film-accurate pony tails on either side of the character's head.

The Amber sculpt features beautiful eyes and pout, pursed lips that accurately capture actress Chung?s sexy look. The sculpt is brought to life by Song Hye Hyun with paints by JC. Hong. Unlike Babydoll, Amber features sculpted brown hair pulled back into a bun. This combined with either the included hat or headset accessories (below) make for an accurate on-screen look that'll please fans and collectors.

Both figures' detailed paint applications come courtesy of JC. Hong and help bring to life the impressive sculpting. Babydoll?s blushed checks, tight thin eyebrows, and pink lips compliment the sculpt by Yulli. Likewise, Amber?s auburn skin tone, black eye liner, and red lips make the sculpt by Song Hye Hyun come to life. Overall, the pair feature well designed, sculpted and painted head sculpts on par with other Hot Toys' figures.

OUTFITS & ACCESSORIES

Sucker Punch was made to appeal to both men and women. It's no doubt a ?girl power? movie (one of the best maybe?) as well as a fan boy's fantasy - scantily clad warrior women battling dragons, robots, and cyborgs. Both Babydoll and Amber include screen-accurate outfits which help make them attractive to both sexes and any and all fans of the film.

Babydoll, as every school boy?s dream, wears a dark blue sailor-styled shirt, short skirt, black sheer thigh high stockings, and dark blue high heel shoes. Armed for close quarter?s battle, the film?s main character comes armed with a .45 ACP pistol, a Japanese-style samurai sword with sheath, and a clip-fed sub-machine gun with silencer. Babydoll also includes a map case with strap, a radio headset, multiple ammunition magazines for her two firearms and a key on a chain. Screen-accurate and impressive in their minute details, the accessories here help complete the figure?s overall look.

Amber too comes dressed to kill in a green military jacket and pants, a pair of black short shorts and fishnet stockings, and a pair of black military boots. Amber, as the crew?s resident pilot, isn?t into hand-to-hand combat and comes armed with a only a single knife and pistol, which are housed in a shoulder sheath and holster. Of course, as the pilot, she also comes with the previously mentioned green mini-military hat and headset. Likewise, Amber includes her signature red lollipop and gold lighter, which plays an integral part of the story.

Both figures include multiple, interchangeable hand sculpts which provide various options for display and allow each figure to hold their various respective accessories. Likewise, both figures include the standard Hot Toys figure base which features the figure?s name and film name.

COST & OVERALL IMPRESSION

With a retail price of $169.99 each, both figures - while within the range of Hot Toys' standard figures - seem slightly high. Casual 1/6th scale collectors may shy away from the Sucker Punch figures due to a lack of film appeal. In today?s figure market, it?s somewhat difficult to gauge fan interest in a line like this, based on a film which didn?t do nearly as well as expected.

Of course, both Babydoll and Amber feature screen accurate and impressive clothing and accessories which will appeal to fans of the film. Though Amber seems light on weapons, her detailed outfit and gorgeous head sculpt more than make up for this. Likewise, Babydoll, who?s heavy on the accessories, makes for a great addition to any fan?s collection in need of an attractive female figure ? especially considering she?s the film?s main character. All in all, it?s hard to go wrong with a well-armed warrior woman dressed in military or school girl garb. If you can find either Babydoll or Amber for less than $145.00, they?re a solid buy.

Both Hot Toys MMS Sucker Punch: Babydoll and Amber are available wherever fine 1/6th scale figures are sold.

Be sure to check out our Hot Toys MMS Sucker Punch Photo Gallery for over 65 photos of these two impressive figures!

Russian team Mettalurg signs NHL's Malkin, Gonchar

MOSCOW (AP) ? NHL stars Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar have signed with Mettalurg of the Kontinental Hockey League after the NHL imposed a lockout of its players.

Metallurg, based in the Russian industrial city of Magnitogorsk, said in a statement Sunday that it signed the two Russian players through the end of the 2012-13 season.

The NHL formally locked out its players early Sunday after the collective bargaining agreement between the sides expired.

Malkin, a 26-year-old center with the Pittsburgh Penguins, is the NHL's reigning MVP. Gonchar, 38, is a defenseman with the Ottawa Senators.

Although the club provided no further detail of their contracts, it said that they would comply with KHL regulations on signing NHL players during the lockout. Under these rules, KHL teams can sign a maximum of three NHL players above their limit of 25.

The KHL also sets the ceiling for the salaries of NHL players at a maximum of 65 percent of what they earn under their NHL deals. Malkin has two years and $16.5 million remaining on his deal with Pittsburgh. Ottawa's Gonchar has one year and $5.5 million left.

Third insider attack kills four U.S. troops in Afghanistan

Four American service members were killed by an Afghan policeman early today, the third attack on coalition forces in three days, bringing the death toll in the recent violence to eight.

The attacks -- two "green on blue" incidents and an assault on a coalition base by 15 Taliban fighters -- come as tensions flared across the Muslim world over an anti-Islam film that was produced in the United States.

In the latest attack, an Afghan police officer turned his gun on NATO troops at a remote checkpoint in southern Afghanistan before dawn. Four U.S. soldiers were killed before the shooter escaped, bringing the total of coalition troops killed to six in just two days.

International Security Assistance Force officials say the attacker is still at large, and noted it's unclear if there were multiple assailants. It is still unclear exactly what transpired at the checkpoint, according to Afghan officials, who say American forces responded to an attack on the checkpoint to help the Afghan police.

"The checkpoint was attacked last night. Then the police started fighting with the Americans," Ghulam Gilani, deputy police chief of Zabul province, said. "Whether they attacked the Americans willingly, we don't know."

A Taliban spokesman said the police involved were not affiliated with the Taliban insurgency.

Also today, NATO confirmed that an airstrike that killed as many as 45 insurgents also killed five to eight Afghan civilian casualties -- including women and children.

"ISAF takes full responsibility for this tragedy," the coalition said in a statement released after the strike.

The civilian casualties can only increase tensions in the country, and villagers who drove the bodies of the dead to the privincial capital, Mehterlam chanted "Death to America," Laghman provincial government spokesman Sarhadi Zewak said.

"Protecting Afghan lives is the cornerstone of our mission and it saddens us when we learn that our action might have unintentionally harmed civilians," said Jamie Graybeal, a spokesman for international military in Afghanistan.

So far this year, 51 coalition troops have been killed by Afghan service members. At least 12 such attacks happened in August alone, leaving 15 dead.

News of the shooting comes after one of the biggest attacks ever on an ISAF base. On Friday, 15 Taliban attackers, dressed in U.S. Army uniforms, attacked Camp Bastion in Afghan's Helmand province.

According to the ISAF, the insurgents used automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and explosive suicide vests in the late night attack. Two U.S. Marines were killed, and nine others were wounded, including one civilian contractor.

During the attack, which officials say appeared to be well planned and rehearsed, the insurgents destroyed six Harrier fighter jets, worth about $20 million each, and damaged two others. They also damaged six hangars and destroyed three refueling stations.

The last attack in which so many U.S. aircraft were destroyed at one time is believed to have been more than 40 years ago, during the Vietnam War.

All but one of the insurgents were killed by return gunfire, and a 15th was captured. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for the controversial video made in the United States that insults the Prophet Muhammad.

Prince Harry, a member of the U.K. military in Afghanistan is based at Camp Bastion. When he was first stationed there, the Taliban said they were out to kill him, although NATO officials say he was several miles away, and was never in danger during this attack.

On Saturday, two British troops were killed in an attack in Helmand province carried out by a gunman in the uniform of a government-backed militia.

Recent months have seen a string of attacks by Afghan forces against their international counterparts, who are working towards handing over security responsibilities to the Afghans as international troops draw down.

This weekend's attacks come amid turmoil throughout the Middle East, where anti-American protests have flared up, ostensibly in response to the online video mocking the Prophet Muhammad.

An attack on the American embassy in Libya last week led to four deaths, including the American ambassador to Libya. The protests have prompted the removal of U.S. personnel from their posts in Sudan and Tunisia.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice told Jake Tapper on "This Week" the attack was not premeditated, contradicting top Libyan officials who say the attack was planned in advance.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the turmoil raging across the Muslim world will likely continue for days, but the violence appears to be leveling off.

He said the Pentagon has "deployed our forces to a number of areas in the region to be prepared to respond to any requests that we receive to be able to protect our personnel and our American property."

ABC News' Muhammad Lila and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Terms of Service

There are a few ground rules for participation in LAGbook. Please respect these rules, and each other.

Be civil.

No personal attacks. Do not feel compelled to defend your honor in public.

Stay on topic in Forums.

Please pay attention to the topic of your messages, and check that it still relates to its parent. Off-topic discussion not taken to private email is eligible for removal.

Be kind to newcomers.

Newcomers may be annoying. But lots of valued contributors started out this way, and treating newcomers kindly makes them more likely to turn into the valuable community members we all know and love.
So while you don't have to humor them or suffer them gladly, and it's fine to point out when they make mistakes, point newcomers in the right direction in addition to turning them away from the wrong ones, and be kind to them in the process of correcting their transgressions.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

It's tempting to revisit controversial decisions you do not agree with, but it's rarely productive to do so, since it almost always results in the same heated, lengthy, and time/energy draining discussions leading to the same conclusion that was reached in the last round.
Therefore, for issues already raised, discussed, and decided upon, reopen the discussion only if you have significant new information that would reasonably prompt reconsideration of the original decision.

Ignore spammers.

Spam is a blight upon the face of the net. Nobody likes it. However, it is hard to avoid. Despite our best efforts, you will occasionally see spam on our site. However, don't forget that complaining about spam in public increases noise, but not signal. It may make you feel better, but it doesn't help.

Identify your subject matter.

Not everyone has time reading all forum and wiki postings. To ensure that your message reach the right people at timely manner, identify your subject matter clearly in the subject line. Subjects like a question and problem are not very helpful.

Why Women Need Life Insurance : National Association of Baby ...

By Pamela J. Sams, CRPC
NABBW?s Retirement Planning for Women Expert

Today, women have more financial responsibilities than ever before. How will your family or loved ones manage financially if you die? Whether you are single, married, employed, or a stay-at-home mom, you probably need life insurance.

At the very least, life insurance can help pay for the costs of funeral and burial services, estate administration, outstanding debts, estate taxes, and the uninsured expenses of a final illness.

Who needs life insurance?

Working women

Increasingly, families depend on the income of two working parents. If you?re a working mother, your income can have a significant impact on the quality of your family?s lifestyle. Your income helps cover the cost of ordinary living expenses such as food, clothing, and utilities, and it provides savings for your children?s college education, and for your retirement. Life insurance protects your family by providing proceeds that can be used to replace your lost income if you die prematurely.

Single women

Often, women, like men, think that it?s not necessary to buy life insurance because they have no dependents. What?s often overlooked is that life insurance can provide necessary funds to pay off car loans, education loans, debts, a mortgage, taxes, and funeral expenses that might otherwise be the responsibility of family members. Also, the cash value of permanent life insurance may be used to supplement retirement income.

Single moms

Whether you?re divorced, widowed, or simply a single mom, you?re most likely primarily responsible for your child?s support. If you die prematurely, life insurance can provide ongoing income to cover child-care costs, medical expenses, debts, and future college costs.

Stay-at-home moms

Maintaining a household is a full-time job, and you have many important roles and duties. The cost of the services performed by a stay-at-home mom could be quite significant if someone had to be hired to do them. If you die, your surviving spouse may have to pay for services such as child care, transportation for your children, and housekeeping. Taking over these added responsibilities could cause your spouse to shorten work hours, resulting in a reduction in income. Proceeds from your life insurance can help your spouse pay for services that keep the household running and allow your spouse to keep working.

Family caregiver

Many women find themselves providing care for both children and elderly family members. Caring for an aging parent or family member can include paying for the costs of adult day care, uninsured medical expenses, and extra transportation. Adding these expenses to the costs of maintaining a household, child care, and college tuition can be financially overwhelming. Unfortunately, these added financial responsibilities often continue after your death. Life insurance provides a source of funds that can be used to help pay for these expenses.

Business owner

You may be one of the increasing number of women business owners. If you die while owning your business, life insurance can be used to provide cash for company expenses such as payroll or operating costs while your estate is being settled. Also, life insurance can be a useful tool for business owners structuring buy-sell arrangements or providing benefits to key employees.

Life insurance types and options

Life insurance comes in many different sizes and shapes, and determining the policy that meets your needs may depend on a number of factors. Understanding the basic types of life insurance can help you find the policy that?s best for you.

Term life insurance

Term life insurance provides a simple death benefit for a specified period of time. If you die during the coverage period, the beneficiary you name in the policy receives the death benefit. If you live past the term period, your coverage ends, and you get nothing back. The cost, or premium, for the coverage can be fixed for the duration of the policy term (usually 1 to 30 years) or it can be ?annually renewable? meaning that the premium can increase each year as you get older. However, the premium for term insurance usually costs less than the premium for permanent insurance when all factors are the same, including the death benefit.

Whole life insurance

Whole life is permanent or cash value insurance that provides insurance coverage for your entire life. With most whole life policies, part of your premium is added to the cash value account, which earns interest. Some whole life policies also pay a dividend, which represents a portion of the company?s profits made during the prior year.

The cash value grows tax deferred and can either be used as collateral to borrow from the insurance company or be directly accessed through a partial or complete surrender of the policy. It is important to note, however, that a policy loan or partial surrender will reduce the policy?s death benefit, and a complete surrender will terminate coverage altogether.

Note: Guarantees are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company.

Universal life insurance

Universal life is another type of permanent life insurance with a death benefit and a cash value account. A universal life insurance policy will generally provide very broad premium guidelines (i.e., minimum and maximum premium payments), but within these guidelines you can choose how much and when you pay premiums. You are also free to change the policy?s death benefit directly (again, within the limits set out by the policy) as your financial circumstances change. But if you want to raise the amount of coverage, you?ll need to go through the insurability process again, probably including a new medical exam, and your premiums will increase.

Variable life insurance

Variable life insurance is a type of cash value coverage that allows you to choose how your cash value account is invested. A variable life policy generally contains several investment options, or subaccounts, that are professionally managed to pursue a stated investment objective. Choices can range from a fixed interest subaccount to an international growth subaccount. Variable life insurance policies require a fixed annual premium for the life of the policy and may provide a minimum guaranteed death benefit. If the cash value exceeds a certain amount, the death benefit will increase.

Variable universal life insurance

Variable universal life combines all of the options and flexibility of universal life with the investment choices of a variable policy. You decide how often and how much your premium payments are to be, within policy guidelines. With most variable universal life policies, you get no guaranteed minimum cash value or death benefit, but you can direct how your premium payments are invested among policy subaccounts.

Note: Variable life and variable universal life insurance policies are offered by prospectus, which you can obtain from your financial professional or the insurance company. The prospectus contains detailed information about investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses. You should read the prospectus and consider this information carefully before purchasing a variable life or variable universal life insurance policy.

Joint and survivor life insurance

You and your spouse may choose to buy a single policy of permanent insurance that covers both of your lives. With first-to-die, the death benefit is paid at the death of the spouse who dies first. With second-to-die, no death benefit is paid until both spouses are deceased. Second-to-die policies are commonly used in estate planning to pay estate taxes and other expenses due at the death of the second spouse. Other than the fact that two people are insured by one policy, the policy characteristics remain the same.

Bottom line

Life insurance protection for women is equally as important as it is for men. However, women?s life insurance coverage is often inadequate. It may be time to consult an insurance professional who can help you assess your life insurance needs, and offer information about the various types of policies available.

Turkey: some Syrian refugees face relocation

(AP) ? Already host to 80,000 Syrians in refugee camps, Turkey is now seeking to relocate some of the tens of thousands of others living outside the shelters to relieve pressure on local communities and better handle security in its tense border area.

Many Syrians who have fled violence in their country are living near the border but outside the dozen camps, either staying with relatives or renting apartments, a large number of them in Antakya, the largest city in Turkey's southeast Hatay province. The influx since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad began 18 months ago has strained municipal resources and tested the ability of the Turkish government to monitor cross-border traffic amid concerns about sectarian tension and militant activity in the region.

Turkish authorities, who support the Syrian opposition in its war with Assad's regime, now want the refugees living outside the camps to either enter them or move to other provinces. Up to 40,000 Syrians are living in Turkey outside the shelters, according to some estimates, while the U.N. refugee agency puts the number at up to 60,000. Hundreds of thousands of other Syrians have also fled to neighboring countries, including Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon.

"A few days ago, the police came and told us we had a week to leave Antakya. They gave us the names of three or four places we could go," said 35-year-old Syrian refugee, Mahmoud Mohammed. He, his wife, their 2-year-old son and his brother's family are living in a two-room apartment for $150 (?116) a month.

Samar Mohammed, Mahmoud's wife, said they had tried to live in a refugee camp but found the conditions difficult.

"My son has bronchitis and suffers from complications. He needs special food and a clean environment," she said. "Our needs weren't met in the camp and his condition got worse. We've been living in this apartment for two months and it would be very hard to go back to the camps."

Antonio Guterres, the U.N. high commissioner for refugees, and Hollywood star Angelina Jolie, a special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency, visited camps near the Syrian border this past week and thanked Turkey for welcoming and providing for Syrians who had fled their homes, while urging donor countries to do more to help. Turkey has pressed in vain for the United Nations to set up "safe zones" inside Syria where civilians can shelter, but divisions within the international community and the security risks of such a project preclude any move to implement it for now.

Antakya's mayor, Lutfu Savas, said there are sectarian tensions along the Syrian-Turkish border, and security concerns and potential discord were the main reasons for plans to relocate refugees who are outside the camps. Many Turks in Hatay province belong to a minority sect that is linked to the Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that dominates the Syrian regime and is fighting an insurgency comprised largely of Sunni Muslims. Turkey is concerned that the sectarian tone of the conflict could exacerbate tension in its own communities.

"In the interest of maintaining order and protecting everyone here, our government wants our (Syrian) brethren to move and live somewhere else," Savas said. "First and foremost, they're being asked to move into the refugee camps. But if they have the means and if they entered (Turkey) using their passports, they're being asked to move out of Hatay. I think it's a valid argument."

A Turkish government official, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with policy, said Turkey was doing everything it can to help Syrians seeking refuge in Turkey.

"Every country has the right to regulate or arrange the accommodation or duration of the stay of foreigners, including Syrians," the official said.

Sali Al-Bounni, a Syrian teacher and assistant principal at a school in Antakya that taught 800 Syrian children, said it was recently closed because of the government's decision to move refugees out of Hatay province.

"The day we closed the school, everyone ? students, teachers ? was crying," he said. "Now the families are calling us and asking where we'll be relocating because they want to move to where the school will be. But we have no idea where to go."

EA and Sony partner to boost real world veteran non-profit orgs

Electronic Arts' Medal of Honor: Warfighter franchise is to get a special extension at the end of this year, with maps adding real-world locations used in an upcoming movie about the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden being added, and proceeds from the expansion going to help real world veterans.

Videogames, movies and the real world are coming together in an unprecedented way to promote both Electronic Arts? Medal of Honor Warfighter franchise and Sony Pictures? Zero Dark Thirty, with part of the proceeds raised by the partnership going to help veterans organizations. Finally, a chance to feel really good about killing virtual bad guys, one at a time.

The partnership between EA and Sony will see exclusive multiplayer maps for the Medal of Honor Warfighter game being made available for download later this year that feature locations from Kathryn Bigelow?s upcoming Zero Dark Thirty movie (If the title of that particular production sounds familiar, it may help when I tell you that it?s the new project from filmmaker Bigelow ? best known, perhaps, for her work on the amazing The Hurt Locker ? and screenwriter Mark Boal that brings the successful mission to locate and kill Osama Bin Laden to life). With each download expected to cost somewhere in the region of $9.99, EA has pledged to donate a portion of profits ? ?At least $1 million,? according to the company ? to Project HONOR, a program designed to raise charitable contributions for non-profit veterans organizations across the country.

Two new locations will be added to the game via these packs, both of them based on real world areas. The first is Darra Gun Market, an arms bazaar in Pakistan, with Chitral being the second location; it?s an area in the far north of Pakistan that borders Afghanistan and China.

EA?s Chief Operating Officer, Peter Moore, said in a statement about the partnership, ?Medal of Honor Warfighter?is inspired by real world events, real operations, and real warriors,? adding that the partnership with Sony allows the company to ?give back to the Special Operations community in honor of the sacrifices they and their families have made for their country and to connect people to the story of the greatest manhunt our world has seen.? It?s a tone that Boal, the screenwriter who worked with Bigelow onZero Dark Thirty, continues. ?Working with Project HONOR is a meaningful way for us to continue our support for combat veterans throughout the armed services,? he said. ?We are thrilled to be a part of this effort, and we?re humbled that EA is stepping up to the plate with such a significant contribution.?

As part of the deal between EA and Sony, a limited-edition Medal of Honor Warfighter disc will be released before the downloadable packs that will feature a trailer for Zero Dark Thirty. The downloadable map packs are scheduled for release during the week of December 17, timed for the release of Zero Dark Thirty in theaters.

Speechwriting

  • Tamara Snyder?describes?five types of leadership stories.
  1. Introducing Me
  2. Conveying Values
  3. Teaching
  4. Jumpstarting Action
  5. Inspiring
  • Nick Morgan?reviews?the recent?United States political convention speeches.

The conventions are one of those increasingly rare moments in American rhetorical life when a general audience watches grownups speaking in public and thinks about what they?re seeing and hearing, however briefly. ?So the conventions are important enough to take a few moments to ponder the highs and lows and what that means for people interested in public speaking everywhere.

  • Dashiell Bennett provides an annotated written-versus-spoken version of Bill Clinton?s convention speech.
[Ed: This is a fascinating glance at the speech editing process.]

Most experienced public speakers know how to deviate and alter and add flourishes to their prepared remarks on the fly, but few do it as well as Clinton. (Even if you disagree with what he?s saying.) As you can see below, from a purely rhetorical standpoint nearly all of his changes enhanced the text in some way and brought added emphasis to arguments. Notice his frequent changing of ?should vote for Barack Obama? to ?must vote.? And his even more frequent use of ?Now? and ?Look? when beginning a point. Many of his best lines ? like his ?bloodsport? quote ? were either ad-libbed or added in back in at the last moment.

  • Alex Rister lists 5 best practices for commencement speeches.
  1. Prepare
  2. Know your audience
  3. Keep it short
  4. Avoid getting too emotional
  5. Unexpectedly inspire

PowerPoint and Visuals

  • Scott Berkun states why he hates Prezi.

The people most drawn to use Prezi are those who are more enchanted by the pretense of style, rather than substance. To this day I have yet to see a Prezi presentation that would not have been better had the speaker used something else, including nothing at all.

  • Terry Gault states why he loves Prezi.

[...] the fundamental difference between PowerPoint and Prezi ? that Prezi requires that you think about the Big Picture while PowerPoint indulges the tendency to recycle and repurpose existing slides without truly thinking about the Big Picture.

  • Laura Bergells (briefly) mocks a ?thank you? slide.

A ?Thank You? slide takes the focus off the genuine emotional gratitude of the speaker. It reduces authentic warmth to an emotionally hollow visual clich?.

Speaker Habits

  • Denise Graveline points out?10 advantages to introducing speakers.

You can say things the speaker can?t: Has the speaker come under attack for what she?s about to tell us? Has she gone unsung for her philanthropy or was she just hired by the most powerful firm in town? It?s easier for the introducer to tell us those things than for the speaker to do so.

Bingham Fellows Class of 2012 will implement projects designed to ...

The Bingham Fellows Class of 2012, charged with ?Creating the path to prosperity ? engaging the community to inspire student achievement,? presented their work to the community at their graduation on Sept. 13.? After months of exploration and creative problem-solving, the 2012 Fellows shared their early outcomes and strategies ahead to engage parents, families and the community for improved academic success.? Concluding remarks were made by Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Donna Hargens. ?

?I?m so impressed with the talent of this group and what they have been able to accomplish,? said Dr. Donna Hargens following presentations by the 2012 Bingham Fellows.? ?They demonstrate that our community is in very good hands and I look forward to seeing the impact of their work on students and learning at JCPS for years to come.?

The 2012 Bingham Fellows include leaders with decades of experience and represent?Louisville?s largest local universities, public and parochial school systems, government agencies, the faith-based community, community-based organizations and local corporations with an interest in the economic implications of an educated workforce.? Their diverse perspectives include an understanding of the needs of single parents and populations from all socio-economic backgrounds.? They are a unique gathering of individuals with expert knowledge and a passion for civic involvement, as Barry and Mary Bingham envisioned when the program was founded in 1988. (Full class list is?below.)

To broaden resources for family and caregiver involvement, the Bingham Fellows concluded that there isn?t one single approach ? solutions need to come from multiple angles and the whole community has a role to play.? Their comprehensive approach is focused on the building blocks of school, community and families.?

The projects include the following:

Principal leadership ? The Great Principals Make Great Schools project worked with JCPS staff to gather input about parental engagement directly from principals at JCPS elementary schools. The data was clear ? from the principals? perspective, parental engagement is critical and more work is needed to engage families and caregivers.? Under development are two solutions?for the needs expressed by principals:? (1) professional development training in the area of family engagement, and (2) creating opportunities for sharing best practices with schools that have similar demographic and engagement challenges.? Research data has also been shared with JCPS administration, new assistant superintendents and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce for use in curriculum development of the Leadership Institute for School Principals.

Most importantly, because accountability and measurement have the ability to raise awareness and focus, the Fellows are collaborating with the JCPS Data Management Department to include a Parental Engagement Index as a key metric for schools. ?

Strong and supportive community alliances ? The principal survey also found that the links between JCPS and community-based organizations (CBOs) are inconsistent.? Because CBOs provide wrap-around services that extend beyond the scope and focus of public schools, intentional relationships between the two have the ability to transform schools.

To strengthen these relationships, the Student Achievement Supports project will work with JCPS to effectively engage and build partnerships with CBOs to improve academic outcomes for students.? Using a single JCPS area, a pilot project will create a structure and process that easily links schools with support services for students and families.? Over 50 organizations have been tapped to be part of the pilot and interest is growing. The pilot will use a formal rapid-change process to increase and strategically align the resources of CBOs with students and families facing critical social and psychological challenges.?

Family and caregiver engagement ? Involvement goes beyond joining the PTA and having bake sales. What impacts student achievement the most is how caregivers engage in learning activities and support at home. The earlier it begins, the more powerful the effect. Actions such as reading, helping with homework, showing interest in school work and positive interactions within schools can have great impact on student success.?

Strong Beginnings ? The Jefferson County Nurturing Early Successful Transitions (NEST) project seeks to ensure children have an emphasis on learning early in their lives and to provide parents and caregivers with a strong foundation as childrens? first educators.? NEST is a pilot program to facilitate collaboration between JCPS and a small number of community-based early childcare centers, reaching about 200 children. Parents and caregivers in these centers will receive personalized education and information about learning activities at home, kindergarten readiness and the new JCPS guidelines for teaching and learning, including the Common Core standards and Common Kindergarten Entry Screener being implemented by the Kentucky Department of Education.? The vehicles for providing this education ? presentations, modeling exercises and a workbook based on the new kindergarten screener ? will be explored with the early childhood personnel, JCPS and parents.

Empowered Parents ? To help inform and educate parents on the ways they can support their child?s academic success, a coalition of key community stakeholders are developing the Parent Education Network (PEN), a parent-led group who will work toward making families and caregivers more sophisticated consumers of education.

Stakeholders include community institutions that support parents, corporations and educators.? With the resources available through these organizations, the PEN has the potential to empower parents who participate, help them develop a peer network and create strategies that help themselves and other parents.? With guidance and support, parents will have the ability to become increasingly involved in home learning activities and find opportunities to teach and be models for their children.

A Culture of Achievement ? When families and caregivers know better, they do better.? A Social Marketing initiative will strive to create a new social norm for caregivers to take simple actions, know key milestones and build higher expectations for positive academic outcomes.?? Using local media outlets and social media, this initiative will reach families where they are and seek to educate the entire community.? From the date of the first day of school to parent/teacher conferences and tips for how and when to review report cards, this information seeks to move the needle of parent and community involvement in a positive direction.

In addition, to increase pride and potential resources for public schools, support will be provided to JCPS for ongoing media relations efforts that highlight extraordinary student activities and academic outcomes.

About the Bingham Fellows program:
The Bingham Fellows program is the advanced leadership program of the Leadership Louisville Center.? It was created in 1988 through a $500,000 endowment from the Mary and Barry Bingham Sr. Fund. The participants are social entrepreneurs who have both a vision and the ability to assemble the resources required to implement that vision to address obvious social needs.? Now in its 21st year, the Bingham Fellows have had an impressive track record of providing emerging issues with visibility and momentum.?

In recent years, they?ve contributed to the development of a long-term vision for our community, enhanced environmental responsibility through initiatives at the grassroots and policy levels, worked to attract and retain talent with an internship program now managed by Greater Louisville Inc. and helped form the Kentucky Indiana Exchange, a regional leadership coalition.? The impact of the Fellows goes back to the 1990s with the creation of The Housing Partnership, construction of the Presbyterian Community Center, growth of local farmers? markets and numerous other positive outcomes.?

?

About the Leadership Louisville Center:
Created in 1979, the Leadership Louisville Center is the region?s most valuable resource for leadership development and civic engagement.? Its mission is to grow and connect a diverse network of leaders who serve as catalysts for a world-class community through dynamic programming and strong community connections. Over 6,000 community leaders have graduated from the Center?s programs that include Leadership Louisville, Focus Louisville, Ignite Louisville and Bingham Fellows.? In 2011, the Leadership Louisville Center was recognized as one of the top seven community leadership programs in the U.S. in a benchmark study by the Center for Creative Leadership, the ?gold standard? global provider of executive leadership education and research.?
