Children who develop asthma by age seven have deficits in lung function and increased bronchial responsiveness as neonates, a new study from researchers in Denmark suggests.
"Previous research on the relationship between neonatal lung function and the development of asthma has been conflicting," said lead author Hans Bisgaard, MD, DMSci, professor of pediatrics at the University of Copenhagen and head of the Danish Pediatric Asthma Centre. "Our study shows that children with asthma by age seven already had significant airflow deficits and increased bronchial responsiveness as neonates. Lung function deficits also progressed throughout childhood in our study, suggesting a potential opportunity for early intervention."
The findings were published online ahead of print publication in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
The prospective study enrolled a birth cohort of 411 at-risk children of asthmatic mothers. Spirometry was performed at one month in 403 (98 percent) children and again at age seven in 317 (77 percent).
Significant neonatal airflow deficits, as measured by forced expiratory flow at 50 percent% of vital capacity and forced expiratory volume after 0.5 seconds, were observed among the 14 percent of children who developed asthma by age seven. Bronchial responsiveness to methacholine, which provokes narrowing of the airways, was also significantly associated with the development of asthma. Neonatal airway reactivity was a stronger predictor of asthma than neonatal lung function.
"We found that approximately 40% of the airflow deficit that was associated with asthma in our study was present at birth, while 60% developed through early childhood along with the disease," noted Dr. Bisgaard. "This indicates that both prenatal and early childhood mechanisms are potential intervention targets for the prevention of asthma."
The study used a homogenous study sample, which might limit extrapolation of the results to other populations.
"It seems that lung function changes associated with asthma occur very early in life and maybe even before birth," concluded Dr. Bisgaard. "This may explain the lack of effect from early intervention with inhaled corticosteroids and should direct research into the pathogenesis and prevention of asthma towards the earliest phases of life."

The University of Liverpool is leading a EUR 8million European project to develop and test new food products with satiating qualities to help control appetite, manage weight and combat obesity.
Satiety-enhanced foods can help with energy intake and weight control. SATIN - SATiety INnovation is a five year, EU funded project that draws together experts from academia and industry to produce new food products using the latest processing innovation techniques. Exploiting better understanding of the biological processes in the stomach and the brain that underpin what makes us feel "full", the project will evaluate whether this approach is a viable weight management tool.
Obesity is a major public health issue facing the European Union and reducing it is a priority for all European governments. It is estimated that 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children in the UK will be obese by 2050. Obesity has a severe impact on people's health, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and heart and liver disease. The direct costs to the NHS (National Health Service) caused by obesity are estimated to be 4.2 billion per year in the UK. In several European countries, the cost of obesity has already reached 5% of public health expenditure.
Professor Jason Halford, Director of the University's Human Ingestive Behaviour laboratory, said: "People who are obese find successful weight loss and maintenance notoriously difficult. Obesity is typically a consequence of overconsumption driven by an individual's natural sensitivity to food stimuli and the pleasure derived from eating high fat and high sugar foods.
"Obese and overweight people are less likely to feel full after eating, partly because of the energy-dense foods they prefer have a reduced impact on gastrointestinal hormone signals that help promote feelings of satisfaction and fullness."
"SATIN aims to draw upon our improved understanding of appetite expression - how the foods we eat affect eating behaviour and appetite. If we can produce foods that fill people up quicker and for longer and taste good then we can help moderate appetite whilst maintaining a healthy balanced diet."
SATIN will use advanced food processing technologies (such as advanced forms of fermentation, vacuum technology, enzyme application, emulsification, ultra-filtration, drying, sublimation and freezing, heat treatment, protein modification and encapsulation) to modify the structure of the foods which accelerate satiation, enhance satiety and to reduce appetite
To date, satiety-enhancing food products on the market have not been effective or appealing in terms of taste. Taste and hedonistic experience of food supercede the health benefits of a food product which is why overweight consumers tend to reject low?energy, high?fibre diets although they promote weight loss. However, changes to the structure and viscosity of food structures have also been found to affect taste and reduce the pleasure of consumption.
There are a number of key strands to the SATIN project which will contribute to the development and production of new satiety food products. The project will develop new in-vitro biomarker profile models which will screen food structures and identify new products which can be developed due to their satiating properties. The structure of the new products will be studied in an artificial gastrointestinal model which will lead to a better understanding of how the products behave in the gut and the effect of metabolic processes on the products.
The new products which are developed will be tested in human trials for their satiety properties, their safety and their sensory effectiveness. They will also be tested to see if they can control appetite and induce longer term weight loss using a robust methodological platform which detects the effects of foods and beverages on the physiological system (gastrointestinal peptides, microbiota, fermentation) and against psychological processes and sensations. This platform will be expanded to provide innovative and comprehensive procedures which can provide future guidance for the industry.
SATIN SATiety INnovation - represents a consortium of 18 academic and industrial partners from 9 European countries including leading research institutes, large companies and small and medium sized companies in the food and retail industry who specialise in novel food formulation and production. Partners include AXXAM, Coca-Cola, a number of universities from UK, Denmark, Sweden and Spain.

The University of Liverpool is leading a EUR 8million European project to develop and test new food products with satiating qualities to help control appetite, manage weight and combat obesity.
Satiety-enhanced foods can help with energy intake and weight control. SATIN - SATiety INnovation is a five year, EU funded project that draws together experts from academia and industry to produce new food products using the latest processing innovation techniques. Exploiting better understanding of the biological processes in the stomach and the brain that underpin what makes us feel "full", the project will evaluate whether this approach is a viable weight management tool.
Obesity is a major public health issue facing the European Union and reducing it is a priority for all European governments. It is estimated that 60% of men, 50% of women and 25% of children in the UK will be obese by 2050. Obesity has a severe impact on people's health, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, some cancers, and heart and liver disease. The direct costs to the NHS (National Health Service) caused by obesity are estimated to be 4.2 billion per year in the UK. In several European countries, the cost of obesity has already reached 5% of public health expenditure.
Professor Jason Halford, Director of the University's Human Ingestive Behaviour laboratory, said: "People who are obese find successful weight loss and maintenance notoriously difficult. Obesity is typically a consequence of overconsumption driven by an individual's natural sensitivity to food stimuli and the pleasure derived from eating high fat and high sugar foods.
"Obese and overweight people are less likely to feel full after eating, partly because of the energy-dense foods they prefer have a reduced impact on gastrointestinal hormone signals that help promote feelings of satisfaction and fullness."
"SATIN aims to draw upon our improved understanding of appetite expression - how the foods we eat affect eating behaviour and appetite. If we can produce foods that fill people up quicker and for longer and taste good then we can help moderate appetite whilst maintaining a healthy balanced diet."
SATIN will use advanced food processing technologies (such as advanced forms of fermentation, vacuum technology, enzyme application, emulsification, ultra-filtration, drying, sublimation and freezing, heat treatment, protein modification and encapsulation) to modify the structure of the foods which accelerate satiation, enhance satiety and to reduce appetite
To date, satiety-enhancing food products on the market have not been effective or appealing in terms of taste. Taste and hedonistic experience of food supercede the health benefits of a food product which is why overweight consumers tend to reject low?energy, high?fibre diets although they promote weight loss. However, changes to the structure and viscosity of food structures have also been found to affect taste and reduce the pleasure of consumption.
There are a number of key strands to the SATIN project which will contribute to the development and production of new satiety food products. The project will develop new in-vitro biomarker profile models which will screen food structures and identify new products which can be developed due to their satiating properties. The structure of the new products will be studied in an artificial gastrointestinal model which will lead to a better understanding of how the products behave in the gut and the effect of metabolic processes on the products.
The new products which are developed will be tested in human trials for their satiety properties, their safety and their sensory effectiveness. They will also be tested to see if they can control appetite and induce longer term weight loss using a robust methodological platform which detects the effects of foods and beverages on the physiological system (gastrointestinal peptides, microbiota, fermentation) and against psychological processes and sensations. This platform will be expanded to provide innovative and comprehensive procedures which can provide future guidance for the industry.
SATIN SATiety INnovation - represents a consortium of 18 academic and industrial partners from 9 European countries including leading research institutes, large companies and small and medium sized companies in the food and retail industry who specialise in novel food formulation and production. Partners include AXXAM, Coca-Cola, a number of universities from UK, Denmark, Sweden and Spain.

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) ? The discovery of a body believed to be that of a beloved teacher at a prestigious boarding school sent shudders of grief and anxiety through a small New England town a day after her SUV was found running with her unharmed 2-year-old boy inside.
Melissa Jenkins, a 33-year-old single mother, taught science at St. Johnsbury Academy, a school of about 970 students that was established in the 1840s and whose alumni include former President Calvin Coolidge.
Vermont State Police Maj. Ed Ledo would not give details on the condition of the body found Monday in Barnet, a town not far St. Johnsbury. A friend who was looking for Jenkins called police Sunday and Jenkins' vehicle was discovered that evening near signs of a struggle.
An autopsy was planned for Tuesday. A family friend is caring for the boy. His father, B.J. Robertson, would not comment on Jenkins' disappearance.
Authorities acknowledged they did not know whether Jenkins' disappearance was isolated, and Ledo said at a news conference that the public should be vigilant as authorities continue to seek a suspect.
Throughout the day, townsfolk converged at the restaurant where Jenkins worked part-time, seeking solace and updates. As they braved bone-chilling winds for an evening candlelight service, news about the discovery of the body began filtering through the crowd.
"She would do anything for anybody. She definitely will be greatly missed," said Ron Craig, of Peacham, who said he and his wife occasionally babysat Jenkins' son.
Craig said it's scary that police did not know if this was an isolated incident. "We've been locking our doors all the time because you just don't know what's going to happen," he said.
Jenkins' vehicle was found not far from her home in a rural area at 11:30 p.m. Sunday. She had no restraining orders out on anyone, police said.
Jenkins was a girls freshman basketball coach and a dorm proctor until she had her son. She graduated from Lyndon State College with a degree in natural science and geology. She was working on her master's degree, headmaster Tom Lovett said.
"She's got a real gift with students who either haven't liked science before or learning science doesn't come easy to them," Lovett said. "She's got a real gift with them."
St. Johnsbury Academy also serves as a public school for the town, about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.
Jenkins was a waitress at night at The Creamery Restaurant in Danville, the eatery where co-workers, friends and the father of Jenkins' son gathered Monday afternoon along with others who were curious or concerned.
"We all know her. It's a tough thing right now," said Marion Cairns, the owner, who described Jenkins as bright, pretty, a good mother and fun to be around. "She'd cut her arms off before she'd let anybody touch that boy. I mean, that boy meant everything to her."
Eric Berry, 44, of Lyndonville, a cousin by marriage whose daughter is Jenkins' goddaughter, described her as a beautiful, kind person whom he believes was coming to someone's aid when she disappeared.
"She left her house with the idea, I think, to try to help somebody, and that's as far as I'm going to go with that because I don't want to damage any investigation," he said.
The academy will provide counseling to grieving students, Lovett said.
The disappearance recalled that of 20-year-old Krista Dittmeyer of Portland, Maine, whose car was found idling with its hazard lights on, her 14-month-old daughter unharmed, a year ago about 50 miles away in New Hampshire. Dittmeyer's body was found in a pond. Three men were arrested on charges in her robbery and killing.
Authorities said Monday there is no indication the cases were related.

Reviews of the CBR250R generally rate its performance in comparison to its the main competitor, which in the US and Canada is the Kawasaki Ninja 250R. The Hyosung GT250, rebadged as the ATK GT250 for 2011, is also a potential US competitor, although it fares poorly in comparison. In India, the Ninja 250R and Hero Honda Karizma R are the leading competition. Though lower in peak power and with a slower top speed than the Ninja 250, the CBR was lauded for having more torque available at lower engine speeds, meaning that it was easier to accelerate from low speed and pulling away required less noise and drama, since the Ninja had to be revved to 9,000 rpm and above to make use of its greater power. This made the CBR250R more pleasant and forgiving to ride than the sportier, but more challenging, Ninja.
