Sky+ rolls out a new HD guide starting today, keeps live, DVR and VOD TV level (video)

Sky rolls out a new HD guide starting today, keeps live, DVR and VOD TV level video

The last time we checked in on Sky+'s UI, the UK TV broadcaster was updating its set-top boxes around the time of the '08 Olympics and now it's starting to roll out a new look just in time for the 2012 Games. The new guide brings HD graphics with new colors and fonts, improved navigation by displaying listings for eight channels at once (up from six), the ability to sort DVR recordings by genre, and a new landing page that sorts content from various sources -- live, DVR or video on-demand -- by genre. More subtle changes include a now-translucent "search and scan" banner and retooled accessibility menu that puts audio options first. According to Sky the initial rollout will hit tens of thousands of Sky+HD boxes today and slowly grow to millions more by year-end. Check out a few screenshots in the gallery below or a video demo of the new features after the break for a first hand look, then let us know if they suit your viewing style.

CSN: Banner out as Eagles' president

? ? ?
The Eagles have made a monumental change to their organization.

Joe Banner is no longer team president.

A press conference will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. It will be live on The Comcast Network.

Banner will remain part of the organization as a strategic adviser to owner Jeffrey Lurie but, in a statement released by the team, said he plans "to pursue a major new opportunity within the sports field."

But don't expect Banner to leave the NovaCare Complex anytime soon. He told CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank that the departure is "very amicable."

"I'm still there and I'll be there for a while," Banner said.

Chief operating officer Don Smolenski has been promoted to president, but he will not assume all of Banner's responsibilities. Banner became known for his mastery of the salary cap, and according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, which first reported the story, salary cap management and contract negotiations will now fall under the purview of his prot?g?, general manager Howie Roseman.

Banner, 59, has been a member of the front office since May 6, 1994, when Lurie bought the team. Banner has been overseeing the day-to-day operations of the team since then and was named team president on August 1, 2001.

"There is no better executive in sports than Joe Banner," Lurie said in a statement. "We are making this announcement today because he is looking for a greater challenge, and in Don Smolenski I have a highly regarded, very worthy successor as president of this team."

Lurie and Banner have been friends since childhood. Banner's contract, a four-year extension signed in 2010, was set to expire after the 2013 season. The two began discussing Banner's desire for a new challenge over a year ago.

"It has been my privilege to work with Jeffrey Lurie over all these years," Banner said. "Together we have built a talented front office team that is now ready to assume leadership of this extraordinary franchise. ... I could never thank Jeff enough for the opportunity and support he has afforded me."

Banner told the Inquirer that he is "an employed free agent" who wants to "get involved with the world of buying and selling a sports team with the possibility of becoming part of a group that buys a team."

The move comes after one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory. The Eagles finished 8-8 after an off-season that saw them make dramatic changes via trade and free agency, which led Banner to proclaim that the Eagles were "all in." One of those free agents, Vince Young, infamously labeled them as a "dream team."

Lurie said the shakeup was not the result of a front office power struggle.

"No, the opposite," Lurie told the Inquirer. "It was all done, I think, for what's best for everybody involved."

The mess that was last season aside, Lurie and Banner rescued a floundering franchise two decades ago. Their most successful move was the hiring of head coach Andy Reid in 1999. Together the three spearheaded the team's resurgence and transformed it into a consistent contender (albeit not a champion).

Since 1995, Lurie and Banner's first full year with the team, the Eagles have made the playoffs 11 times. Only the Colts (13) have reached the postseason more in that span.

"As I have stated before," Reid said, "the success of the team is most often credited to the players and coaches, but without the support and hard work of the front office, led by Joe Banner, we would not have achieved all that we accomplished."

Smolenski, 45, joined the organization in 1998 as vice president and chief financial officer and was named COO on April 1, 2010. Before joining the Eagles, Smolenski was the Chief Financial Officer for the International Hockey League.

?Don is one of the unknown jewels in the NFL,? Banner said, ?and so deserving of this chance to help steer this great franchise going forward.?

"Joe has been a great friend, teacher and mentor," Smolenski said. "His support and confidence have been instrumental to my growth and development in the organization. As the Eagles new president, I?m excited to build on the work we?ve done together over the years."

Roseman's career with the Eagles wouldn't have happened without Banner, who in 2000 gave him an entry-level position to assist with salary cap matters. The 36-year-old Roseman was named general manager in January 2010.

"Joe and I have achieved a great deal since I acquired the team," Lurie said. "From building Lincoln Financial Field and the NovaCare Complex, to driving the work of the Eagles Youth Partnership and, of course, our successes on the field, Joe has been an integral part of everything we have done."

Google Maps go off-road and offline

6 hrs.

Many of us rely on Google Maps to find our way around, but the service doesn't help us much once we leave the roads or our Internet connections. That's about to change?? and everything's getting more accurate, too, according to the search giant.

During a press event in San Francisco, Wednesday,?Brian McClendon?? Vice President of Engineering for Google Maps?? discussed how the service will let us go off-road, thanks to something called?Street View Trekker.

Trekker is a way for Google to go into places where the traditional Street View cars can't. All the gear necessary for Google staff to photograph the spots only accessible by foot fits into a backpack. This means that Street View will soon let you explore ski slopes, canyons, and more.?

McClendon also focused on how the company is working to keep?Google Maps up-to-date and?accurate. As the world is constantly changing?? we're constantly constructing something new, after all?? this is a "never?ending job," says McClendon.

Google regularly cross-checks its maps, according to McClendon. This allows the company to ?significantly update its data. Feedback from users who report problems and changes via Google's Map Maker tool helps, too.

That's fine and dandy, but what good are these snazzy maps when you can't access them without a data connection?

Well, that concern will soon?be moot. Google is going to launch offline Google Maps for Android in the next few weeks. This means that you'll be able to use Google Maps even if you are on the subway or in another spot that lacks Internet connectivity. All you have to do is select the regions you need to explore while offline and download them. Google will show you how much space you'll need to save the relevant files.

The Google press conference preempts?Apple's?annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)?keynote on June 11, when it's expected the iPhone maker will announce its own map application.?According to BGR's Jonathan Geller, iOS 6 ? the next version of Apple's mobile operating system ??will bring 3-D mapping features which use?mapping technology developed by Apple.?

No word on whether Phone users will get to enjoy an?similar feature to the updates Google announced for Android, though that may not be a concern if the reports of Apple ditching Google Maps are true.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

(AP) ? Pealing church bells, artillery salutes and crowds cheering "God save the queen!" greeted Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday on the last of four days of Diamond Jubilee celebrations honoring her 60 years on the throne.

Poignantly, the queen was without Prince Philip, her husband of 64 years, who was hospitalized on Monday for treatment of a bladder infection.

At a morning service of thanksgiving at St. Paul's Cathedral, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, praised the queen for bringing happiness to the nation. His thoughts were seconded by jubilant crowds that cheered royals major and minor as they made their way to and from the church.

"We are marking six decades of living proof that public service is possible and that it is a place where happiness can be found," Williams told the royals and dignitaries filling the vast landmark church designed by Christopher Wren in the 17th century.

The queen returned to Buckingham Palace in the afternoon, braving the first few drops of rain in an open carriage, later to appear on the palace balcony with the present and future of the monarchy: her heir Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Prince William, the second-in-line, and his wife Kate, and William's brother Prince Harry.

There were more cheers as a noisy Lancaster bomber, four Spitfire fighters and a Hurricane fighter ? all recalling the nation's battle for survival in World War II ? emerged from the leaden skies to fly over the palace. They were followed by nine jets spewing red, white and blue smoke.

The crowds, forming a sea of bobbing umbrellas, stretched all the way down the Mall, the wide road leading to Buckingham Palace. As the Irish Guards doffed their bearskin hats to lead three cheers for the queen, the 86-year-old monarch beamed.

The Jubilee affirmed the nation's unmatched skills for staging impressive ceremonies, evoking the power and swagger of its vanished empire. The celebrations demonstrated as well the misery which some Britons will endure ? even sleeping outside in a cold rain ? in pursuit of a good time.

Philip's absence caused some hasty rearrangement of preparations but seemed not to dampen the high spirits. Prince Edward, who made a brief visit to the hospital, reported that his father was "getting better."

Williams paid tribute to the queen for her service to the nation and Commonwealth. It was not a role she chose, but one thrust upon her when her uncle David, King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936. The queen's father became king and Elizabeth, the elder daughter, was destined to reign.

Within the constraints of a constitutional monarchy, the queen's life has been one of ceremonial duty, world travel and the pleasures of great wealth. She has also been the mother of family that has produced turbulent marriages and traumatic divorces.

"Dedication to the service of a community certainly involves that biblical sense of an absolute purge of selfish goals, but it is also the opening of a door into shared riches," Williams said.

"I don't think it's at all fanciful to say that, in all her public engagements, our queen has shown a quality of joy in the happiness of others; she has responded with just the generosity St. Paul speaks of in showing honor to countless local communities and individuals of every background and class and race," Williams said.

"She has made her public happy and all the signs are that she is herself happy, fulfilled and at home in these encounters."

Attired in an outfit of fine silk tulle, embroidered with tiny mint green star-shaped flowers embellished with silver thread, the queen was a small, elegant figure, rarely smiling and often solemn as she followed the service.

As she left the cathedral, the queen paused near a tablet commemorating the Diamond Jubilee service of Queen Victoria in 1897.

Following the service, the queen went to the thousand-year-old Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Parliament complex, to join 700 guests from the various Livery Companies ? the guilds which originated in the Middle Ages.

Prince William sat at the Worshipful Company of Engineers and Arbitrators table, while his wife Kate was placed with the Master Glovers and Pattenmakers. Prince Harry dined with the Fruiterers and Gardeners.

With most of Tuesday's events indoors or under cover, there was less worry about the precarious weather, which has ranged from unseasonably cool to downright foul, as rain poured during Sunday's grand procession of boats down the Thames.

The queen will close the Diamond Jubilee celebrations with a rare address to the nation, to be broadcast at 1700 GMT (1 p.m. EDT) in Britain and throughout the Commonwealth.

The two-minute address, recorded on Monday, will also be available on the Royal Channel on YouTube, the palace said. Other than the annual Christmas Day broadcasts, the 86-year-old monarch has rarely spoken directly to the nation.

Twin sisters Margaret and Dorothy Roake were standing in the Mall more or less where they had been standing on coronation day in 1953. "The coronation was fabulous and this is really special, it makes you feel a reality in being British," Margaret Roake said.

Benedict Cleotes, 40, from the Philippines, said he came to the Mall at 4 a.m. to claim his spot. "Seeing the queen is very special to me and I want to have something to tell them in the Philippines. They will be jealous," he said.

Among the early arrivals at the cathedral were four women from Jedburgh, a Scottish town near the English border, who displayed a large Union Jack flag.

"We've been saving for three years to come here," said Marion Kingswood, 69. "Apart from the royal wedding, there's been nothing like it. Sixty years is such an achievement."

Barry Dandy, 71, and his wife flew in from Sydney, Australia, to join in the celebrations.

"They showed a preview of the River Pageant on Australian television and my wife said, 'I'd love to be there,'" Dandy said. "It's been great to take part in the celebrations."

The Very Rev. David Ison, the dean of St. Paul's, said Philip would be remembered in the prayers.

"We were already going to say prayers for the Duke of Edinburgh and it will have an added poignancy as we hope he will make a swift recovery," Ison said.

A few anti-monarchist demonstrators were outside the cathedral with slogans including "Republic Now!" or, in a shot at the cost of maintaining the monarchy, "9500 Nurses or 1 Queen?"

Royalists in the crowd responded noisily, chanting "God save the queen!"

Along the parade route, 70-year-old Margaret Barker said Philip's absence would put a damper on the queen's day.

"She's got the rest of her family around her but when you think of all the planning there's been for this and how long they've been together, it seems very sad that he can't be with her today," Barker said.

Tourist Cassandra Past, 20, from New York, said she expected the queen to keep her chin up despite worries about her 90-year-old husband. "She is the queen, and she sort of has to put on a good face for her country and her people," Past said.

Gas prices drop nationally as economy slows

Gas prices have dropped more than 30 cents a gallon in most parts of the US, resulting from a steep plunge in oil prices. The national average for gas prices is $3.59, down five cents from last week.

The average price for regular gas in Ohio is about $3.56 a gallon in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's down 12 cents from a week ago.

Gas cost about $3.93 a gallon at this time last year.

A plunge in oil prices has knocked more than 30 cents off of the price of a gallon of gas in most parts of the U.S. since early April. Experts predict further declines in the next few weeks.

Nationally, the average price for regular gas slipped to about $3.59, down a nickel from last week.

With big labels, other sectors down, big money hears call of Music ...

Los Angeles investor Ron Burkle has made billions in leveraged buyouts of supermarket chains and on a diverse portfolio of investments, including pro hockey?s Pittsburgh Penguins and clothing retailer Barneys New York.

Now, Burkle is turning his attention ? and his $30 billion private equity firm, The Yucaipa Cos. ? to Nashville?s country music industry.

This week, company executives will head to Nashville on a fact-finding trip that involves meetings with ?top managers, record executives and agents who represent some of the biggest stars in Nashville so we can get a better understanding of where we might fit in the country music scene,? said Rick Stevens, CEO of Burkle?s newly created music investment subsidiary, Y Entertainment Group.

?With the fundamental changes in the music industry, we believe there?s a great opportunity for a handful of well-financed players to come in and be the impetus for the future,? Stevens said.

Burkle is far from the only wealthy investor showing interest in Nashville?s music business ? which this week is on star-studded display as tens of thousands of fans converge at the annual four-day CMA Music Festival starting Thursday.

Analysts say the convergence of two key economic trends is making this an opportune time to invest in Nashville?s signature industry:

First, music companies, which have seen revenues drop in the digital music era, may have neared bottom, creating a sweet spot for fresh investors ready to ride what they hope will be a less risky business sector back to profits.

Second, weak returns in other business sectors have left some investors casting around for novel investment opportunities that could bear sweeter fruit, said John Frankenheimer, partner and chairman emeritus with theLos Angeles-based Loeb & Loeb law firm.

?There?s not a good opportunity to put money into bonds and get the returns. Real estate is choppy, and pricing is a challenge. The stock market in the past decade has been incredibly volatile,? Frankenheimer said.

?Investors are looking for a business they can get into and bring their professional discipline, then exit when it?s worth 2? times that. The music industry can be the type of opportunity for them, particularly when you see the growth opportunities for digital.?

Frankenheimer?s firm handled perhaps the biggest single private-equity transaction in the music industry in the past year, representing Warner Music Group in its$3.3 billion sale to Russian-born oil billionaire Len Blavatnik and his firm, Access Industries.

The purchase gave Blavatnik ownership of longtime Nashville subsidiary Warner Music Nashville, which represents Faith Hill, Dwight Yoakam, Big & Rich and Randy Travis, among others.

Sale was catalyst
Warner?s sale served as a catalyst for Burkle?s interest in music, Stevens said.

Yucaipa was one of the original bidders on Warner Music Group.

Although the company later withdrew its bid, the process of conducting due diligence for a possible purchase of Warner educated executives about the industry?s prospects.

?We came to the realization that a better course of action would be to build our own entity from scratch by building our own group of companies, each of which had a specialty in the business,? Stevens said.

This year the company purchased AGI, the New York-based concert-booking agency.

Nashville?s music scene represents ?probably the most consistent area once success is established in terms of consistency of record sales, loyalty of fans that?s unique in the entertainment business,? Stevens said. He will be in town for a two-day, behind-the-scenes business meeting called the Country Music Summit, which has for the past three years come right before fan-focused CMA events.

The local music industry is also attracting other interest.

Bigger Picture Group was launched in Nashville in 2008 as a subsidiary of a newly formed Pennsylvania company, Red Stripe Plane Group, which has interests in casinos, night clubs and technology.

The company was founded by mergers and acquisitions expert Gary Veloric, whose other interests include a financial services company and the health-care industry.

Bigger Picture consists of an independent record label whose roster includes successful country performers such as the Zac Brown Band, which it handles in partnership with Atlantic Records, and Craig Campbell. It has a music publishing arm called Songs of Bigger Picture that has cuts by country music artists Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney. And it has a sister company called Idea Den that provides digital services.

David Robkin, the Philadelphia-based CEO who commutes to Nashville to run the company, said the disruption in the music industry was what drew the investment.

?In disruption, things take place,? Robkin said. ?And particularly because of the digital evolution, we think that?s a tremendous opportunity for growth.

There?s also an opportunity to start fresh with a clean-slate business.

?The legacy companies have been burdened with their cost structure and payroll structure,? Robkin said. ?We really started with a white sheet of paper and the opportunity to be creative and efficient.?

The business model is based on creating new joint ventures with each artist, often 50-50 partnerships, in which the company brings the capital needed to launch the artist?s career with recording, promoting, touring and publishing.

Country music has a special attraction to investors, said Robkin, whose varied background includes finance and rock music.

?The timing is getting even better for country music,? he said. ?The audience is growing. It?s not limited to the South anymore. It?s less country western and perhaps more country pop, country rock. That makes it more accessible.

?The tremendous success of all the country awards shows on television is another signal. I started noticing that when Kenny Chesney came to Philadelphia he was playing in front of 45,000 people. He was sold out. At the time, I was like, ?Who is he?? The format just keeps getting bigger, and that?s really exciting to investors.?

Sweeter returns
Robkin said his company expects its investment to bring ?venture-sized? returns, which he said could be 25 percent, 30 percent or better.

One key to success is bringing aboard experienced industry professionals.

Music Row pros Keith Stegall, a former Mercury Nashville A&R executive and a producer and songwriter best known for his work with Alan Jackson; and Michael Powers, former senior vice president of promotion for Universal Records South, are part of Robkin?s crew.

But front-end investments in music should not be underestimated, and the time required to see returns won?t necessarily be short, investors say.

?The truth is to be involved in the country music business does take substantial capital,? Robkin said. ?The nature of country music is still so dependent on country radio, so you need to have the infrastructure and capital to promote your artists. The price of entry into country music is steep.?

Benny Brown, a California car dealer and entrepreneur who started Broken Bow Records, one of the few surviving independent labels that launched in the 1990s, has said it took nearly six years of substantial cash losses before that company started making money with stars such as Jason Aldean and Craig Morgan.

And industry veteran Joe Galante, former chairman of Sony Music Nashville, strikes a cautionary note as well.

?I don?t think people should operate under the assumption that private equity is apparent in a big way in Nashville,? Galante said. ?There?s some opportunity in terms of investment, but there are also people who have invested in labels who?ve gotten their butts kicked.?

?With private equity money coming in, or venture money coming in, you aren?t seeing the kind of returns that you might see in the digital space or in health care,? he said. ?Getting half a million (dollars)? OK. But it?s not tens of millions.?

More potentially lucrative than record labels, Galante adds, are artist management ventures or digital startups.

Who has money?
Frankenheimer, the Los Angeles attorney who has negotiated private equity takeovers of music companies, said the industry will probably continue to draw two types of interested investors.

Those interested in startups can find opportunities in the music sector and build a company to scale. They?re more likely to be drawn by the cachet the industry provides.

?It?s emotional for some investors who are drawn for the same reasons they might be drawn to sports franchises,? Frankenheimer said.

Those interested in buying existing companies are an entirely different breed.

?They?re going to be analyzing the numbers closely, looking at the cash flow, rationalizing the overhead against the cash flow and trying to build a business that makes sense either by size or as part of a roll-up strategy. (That means) buying smaller businesses and streamlining them in a group with some sort of unified backroom oversight,? the attorney said.

Most transactions aren?t going to be on the scale of the billions of dollars required to buy a major record label.

But private equity firms and venture capitalists are interested in the next wave of startup independent labels, which over the past few years have led to some of the music industry?s top success stories, including artists such as Taylor Swift, Adele and Mumford & Sons.

Does the money behind the label affect the music?

?Motown was driven by its own vision, not investors,? Frankenheimer said. ?It?s nice to find a balance between visionaries who can also access capital and build those companies. That?s where we might be right now.?

Best Practices in Lead Generation and Lead Management | Totally ...

Posted on June 2, 2012 by admin

There are many different solutions for generating and locating your next lead.

Radio & TV advertising are very popular with companies ready to spend millions for a 60 second Super Bowl spot. Some of those commercials may be memorable, but the ROI of those multi-million dollar investments can be difficult to track. Moreover, while they may be good for generating business long-term and building brand equity, they are usually not the most effective in selling more now.

Direct mail was an oft-seen but now decreasingly used marketing medium, perhaps with the rise of the Internet. While some may argue that the decline in competition makes direct mail more effective, for many companies, it?s still tough to justify a 20 page color brochure when 98% of recipients will immediately put it in the recycling bin. A less expensive alternative may be to send a postcard with a link to a 20-page online brochure. It would also be easier on the environment.

The popularity of print advertising is also on the decline thanks to the Internet. Back in March 2009, The Wall Street Journal had an article about the 10 most endangered newspapers in America. They suggested that 8 of the nation?s 50 largest daily newspapers would stop printing in the next 18 months. They included The Philadelphia Daily News, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Miami Herald, the Detroit News and the Boston Globe, to name a few. Why? As we all know, plummeting readership rates. So, not only is the effectiveness of this medium falling, but, as with radio and TV ads, it?s difficult to measure its true impact on sales. It?s like Henry Procter of Procter & Gamble said, ?I know I waste half of my advertising dollars? I just wish I knew which half.?

Trade shows have always been a staple of lead generation. The people who attend are generally already looking for a solution in your market space. In fact, that?s why they?re there. But is it effective for creating new leads? The fact is, eighty percent of trade show leads are never followed up on. It seems that trade shows produce more sore feet, aching backs and hoarse voices than actual new business sales leads. While it may be a great way to see what the competition has to offer and catch up with old industry friends, creating qualified leads that turns into business is not a common feature of trade shows.

For some, the answer is cold-calling, good, old-fashioned knocking-on-doors and handing out business cards. In the early 80?s, I was a sales manager for a computer reseller in Chicago. We?d have cold-calling days. Each rep would be assigned a high-rise building in Chicago, and we?d start at the top of the building, visiting each office as we worked our way down. We had a short script, ?Hi, my name is Andy. I work for Systems Source just down the block. We sell computers and office products. I?d like to leave you my card.? Sometimes we?d strike up a conversation that would lead to new business but most times not. Was that the most effective use of our time? Maybe back then, without the advances in modern technology, but by today?s standards, probably not. In fact, given that on average ten percent of cold calls actually create opportunities, most of that time prospecting is spent sifting through dead or inactive leads.

Corporate America spends a fortune on generating leads. Unfortunately, most is wasted or not able to be tracked. According to a recent survey by the Yankee Group, up to 80% of all leads are lost as they travel through the average company?s marketing/sales loop. Why is that?

The truth is, sales is about selling something today. Most sales people are focused on this quarter because if they don?t make their number this quarter they might not have a chance to close that deal next quarter. So if prospects aren?t ready to buy now, they often just collect dust in some faraway place in your database.

So how do you really generate ROI on your marketing activities? How do you make the most of your marketing investments? By utilizing best practices in lead generation. This usually consists of the following three-step process.

First, you?ll want to focus your sales energy on prospects who have demonstrated a need for your product instead of shooting randomly into the dark. Think what this could do for your business. Your sales team could interact only with qualified prospects, the ones who come to you looking for your product or service. They?d spend more time consulting with prospects to better understand their needs and even up-selling. Moreover, they would have more time for presentations and demos, instead of spending time on sifting through uninterested or dead leads; in fact, they would have more presentations and demos, period. In short, instead of wearing out shoe leather looking for prospects they?d be closing deals with qualified prospects.

Sounds pretty good, right? But how do you provide your sales team with such great leads?

This brings us to our second point, which is to incorporate a response mechanism into your marketing campaigns. Then you can easily find those who approach you for your goods or services. Now, all of the aforementioned methods of lead generation can incorporate a response mechanism, but the easiest way to generate response is through the Internet.

Everyday Google receives more than 91 million search requests. The top 5 search engines receive more than 200 million requests daily. Yes, some will be looking for what happened on last week?s Lost, but a significant number is searching for a solution just like yours. Plus, if you?re in the #1 spot of the search results page there?s a 56% chance that the reader will click on your link. And chances are, with a specific enough request, you?ll get a new prospect opportunity as well. For example, let?s say you sell hydraulic pumps and you spend enough on SEO that you land the #1 spot on search results. Most people aren?t Googling hydraulic pumps to see what it wore to the Emmy?s last night; they?re there to buy. Users click to your site because they need a hydraulic pump, and you got it. But, you?ve also got yourself a HOT new lead.

And you don?t have to be a Fortune 500 company to use Google Adwords. You can advertise a specific solution in a specific geographic area at a very reasonable cost with amazing results. With the Google content network you can get massive impressions for a fraction of traditional advertising. I?m running a campaign right now that in January had 451,863 impressions and 262 clicks for a total cost of $ 73.96. Not a bad deal.

Okay, so now, let?s say you?ve got all your marketing media integrated with response mechanisms. You?ve done your search engine optimization so that you?re getting qualified leads via the internet. You?re in great shape, right? Now you?re only interacting with prospects who are interested in your solution.

But not so fast. What if some of your leads don?t want to buy for 6, 12 or 18 months? It?s easy enough for your sales guys to qualify them to find out when they plan to buy so you can focus your efforts on those who are ready to buy now. But what do you do with lead that need some time on the burner? How do you stay in touch with people on a regular basis without spending all of your time staying in touch?

So there is one final step in best practices lead generation ? lead nurturing. It?s fast, it?s easy and more importantly, it WORKS.

Start by sorting your contacts into groups. For example, you might sort by solution, industry, company size, interest group or some other category. Once you?ve got them in groups you can communicate relevant information to them as a group. Using lead nurturing software you can personalize the message without having to craft each individual email. You?ll want to touch base regularly but not so often that your contact sees your communication as annoying.

Also, your message must be relevant and be meaningful. Do your research. Think carefully about what you?re going to say. After all, this message might be going to 50 or 100 people who may become 50 or 100 hot new leads. Isn?t it worth the effort to take some time doing it right? Once you?ve crafted the message, you can send personalized emails to all one hundred with a single click of the mouse (with decent marketing automation software).

So, come time to buy, you?ll already be in your prospects? thoughts. You can even include surveys in your lead nurturing track to provide additional information about your prospects? needs and purchase timeframe. Then just keep nurturing those cold leads until they?re sales ready.

Of course, you can?t do it all with technology. Tweeting and texting are no replacement for the personal touch. You still need to pick up the phone and speak with your prospects. And you can make your conversation with them even more effective with a cloud-based CRM that records your organization?s complete prior communication with the prospect. But the point is you still need to personally stay in touch with your prospects. Even if it?s only a brief phone call once a month, talk to your prospects.

Lead generation has come a long way since I was handing out business cards. We?ve gone from walking miles on our feet from one lead to the next to emailing promotions and newsletters to hundreds of prospects instantaneously. We used to be limited to the city we lived in and the radius we could drive; now we have instant access (via email) to individuals and companies from here to Myanmar, whenever and wherever. And while some of us miss the days of person to person contact and face time (myself included), who says we can?t have both? Why not use all the advantages that modern technology affords us, but at the same time add our own personal touch by targeted emails, phone calls and touching base from time to time?

The point is this. Don?t sell yourself (and your sales team) short. You can make the best use of your time, resources and efforts, to the effect of dramatically increasing your success and the success of your organization.
