Friday (April 6) brings us the first full moon of the new spring season.?
The official moment that the moon turns full is 19:19 UT, or 3:19 p.m. EDT.
Traditionally, the April full moon is known as "the Pink Moon," supposedly as a tribute to the grass pink or wild ground phlox, considered one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other monikers include the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and, among coastal Native American tribes, the Full Fish Moon, for when the shad came upstream to spawn.
(Traditional names for the full moons of the year are found in some publications, such as the Farmers' Almanac. We also published the complete list of full moon names here on SPACE.com. The origins of these names have been traced back to Native America, though they may also have evolved from old England or, as Guy Ottewell, editor of the annual publication Astronomical Calendar, suggests, "writer's fancy.")
The first full moon of spring is usually designated as the Paschal Full Moon or the Paschal Term.? Traditionally, Easter is observed on the Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon. Following these rules, we find that the date of Easter can fall as early as March 22 and as late as April 25. Pope Gregory XIII decreed this in 1582 as part of the Gregorian calendar. So according to the current ecclesiastical rules, Easter Sunday in 2012 is to be celebrated April 8.
Interestingly, these rules also state that the vernal equinox is fixed on March 21, despite the fact that from the years 2008 through 2101, at European longitudes it actually will occur no later than March 20.?
Adding additional confusion is that there is also an "ecclesiastical" full moon, determined from ecclesiastical tables, whose date does not necessarily coincide with the "astronomical" full moon, which is based solely on astronomical calculations. In 1981, for example, the full moon occurred on Sunday, April 19, so Easter should have occurred on the following Sunday, April 26. But based on the ecclesiastical full moon, it occurred on the same day of the astronomical full moon, April 19!
Hence, there can sometimes be discrepancies between the ecclesiastical and astronomical versions for dating Easter. In the year 2038, for instance, the equinox will fall on March 20, with a full moon the next day, so astronomically speaking, Easter should fall on March 28 of that year. In reality, however, as mandated by the rules of the church, Easter 2038 will be observed as late as it can possibly come, on April 25.
So in practice, the date of Easter is determined not from astronomical computations but rather from other formulae such Golden Numbers.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, a proposal to change Easter to a fixed holiday rather than a movable one has been widely circulated, and in 1963 the Second Vatican Council said it would agree, provided a consensus could be reached among Christian churches. The second Sunday in April has been suggested as the most likely date. That, incidentally, works outs rather nicely this year.
Harvest moon effect, in reverse
The full moon occurring nearest to the autumnal equinox is traditionally called the Harvest Moon. What sets the Harvest Moon apart from the others is that instead of rising at its normal average of 50 minutes later each day, it seems to rise at nearly the same time for several nights.
In direct contrast to the Harvest Full Moon, the Paschal Full Moon appears to rise considerably later each night. Below we've provided some examples for 10 North American cities.
Although normally the moon rises about 50 minutes later each night, over this three-night interval for our relatively small sampling we can see that the rising of the moon comes, on the average, just over?76 minutes later each night. A quick study of the table shows that the night-to-night difference is greatest for the more northerly locations. (Edmonton, located at latitude 53.6?N, sees moonrise come an average of?88minutes later.) Meanwhile, the difference is less at southerly locations. (In Miami, located at latitude 26?N, the average difference is about?67 minutes.)?
The reason for this seasonal circumstance is that the moon appears to move along the ecliptic (the path the sun takes across the sky), and at this time of year when rising, the ecliptic makes its largest angle with respect to the horizon for those living in the Northern Hemisphere.?
In contrast, for those living in the Southern Hemisphere, the ecliptic at this time of year appears to stand at a more oblique angle to the eastern horizon. As such, the difference for the time of moonrise is noticeably less than the average of 50 minutes per night. In Sydney, Australia, for instance, the night-to-night difference amounts to just 40 minutes.

For those who have never heard of live-in care, there is a lot to learn, and it can be overwhelming. MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - The president of Somalia's Olympic committee and the head of the national soccer federation were killed in a bomb blast Wednesday that the IOC called an "act of barbarism."
Somali Olympic Committee head Aden Yabarow Wiish and Somali Football Federation chief Said Mohamed Nur were among at least 10 people killed in the explosion at the newly reopened national theater in Mogadishu during a ceremony also attended by top government officials.
The government said a female suicide bomber carried out the attack, but Islamist group al-Shabab, using its official Twitter feed to claim responsibility, said explosives had been planted in the theater before the event.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said his country would "stand with" Somalia's Olympic team at this year's London Games in memory of their loss.
The bomb went off as Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali was standing at a podium to deliver a speech. The prime minister was unharmed, said government spokesman Abdirahman Omar Osman.
The attack came with the country's Olympic committee preparing for the London Games, which start on July 27. Somalia has sent athletes to the last four Summer Olympics despite violence and instability at home.
"This is obviously a very difficult moment for everyone involved with the Somali Olympics team," British Prime Minister Cameron said in a statement. "But I hope that with time, as they move beyond today's tragic events, so they will unite their country and honor the memory of those who have lost their lives today by competing in the London Olympics.
"We will welcome them and stand with them in memory of their very sad loss."
The International Olympic Committee said it was "shocked to hear of the terrorist attack" that killed two of Somalia's sports leaders.
"Both men were engaged in improving the lives of Somalian people through sport and we strongly condemn such an act of barbarism," the IOC said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the Somalian sporting community who lost two great leaders and with the families of the victims."
FIFA President Sepp Blatter said his thoughts were with the soccer and sporting "family" in Somalia.
"I knew both men personally and can only say good things about their endless efforts to promote sport and football in their country. They will be sorely missed," Blatter said.
African Football Confederation president Issa Hayatou sent condolences to the families of those killed.
"It is another black day for African football. It's a tragedy as Somali football lost a great leader ... who was actively committed to football development despite very challenging conditions."
Somali sport was rocked by at least two terrorist attacks last year. In October, Somali Football Federation general secretary Said Arab and a national team player were hurt when a car bomb killed 57 people in Mogadishu.
Earlier in 2011, an under-20 international player was killed in a blast and two teammates were injured when they were walking home from a practice session.
The national soccer team has struggled and did not enter the qualifying competition for next year's African Cup. It has already been eliminated from qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

A recent article in the Washington Post discussing the effects of various foods on heart health identified the greatest health risk of coffee to be weight gain from blended coffee beverages packed with empty calories from sugar and dairy fat.
Lately, it seems the creator and biggest purveyor of the beverages has been trying to rise above criticism they?re as guilty as McDonalds and other fast food chains for contributing to high rates of obesity and diet-related diseases.
Along with introducing oatmeal to its menu, Starbucks published guides to 20 Drinks Under 200 Calories? as well as ?Favorite Foods under 350 calories? on its website. ?Unfortunately, Starbucks plays down the healthiest beverages (full-leaf teas, brewed coffee and Caffe Americano) which all have under 10 calories. For example?if you?ve grown tired of Pikes Place?did you know you can order any of Starbucks beans in stock be prepared with a French-press?
Adding milk or cream and sugar to brewed coffee is so common among Starbucks? U.S. customers, the baristas ?leave room? in the cup by default.?No wonder hard-core coffee drinkers (those who know the difference between an?ibrik and a v60) don?t take the chain seriously, especially after it introduced the lightly-roasted Blonde coffee (now its most popular), further blurring the line with pedestrian coffee.
Of course, only Starbucks? pure coffees/teas and those made with soymilk?instead of dairy milk?are of any interest to those on a whole foods plant-based diet.?For the record, Starbucks custom-blended soymilk contains more calories and saturated fat than its skim milk. However, soymilk contains no cholesterol (vs 5g for non-fat milk) and does contain fiber, a beneficial nutrient found only found in plant-based foods.

In fact?except for that rare special occasion (your birthday, a lunar eclipse, etc.)?your best option is sticking to plain coffee or tea. Assuming you?re serious about coffee and tea, why water it down and cover up the taste with sugar?
By the way, if you?re watching your calories, always be prepared to refuse samples of new food and drink items offered. If not, you may consume a lot more calories than you intended. I know from firsthand experience, it?s easy to drink or eat something on impulse, and most people don?t give it much thought. Or, if you really want to try a sample, and have already satiated your sweet tooth (or calorie limit), you may want to just turn around and head out the door.
I?ll be discussing Starbucks??Favorite Food Menu in a separate post. I was pleased to learn from its interactive nutrition guide the menu included any vegan-friendly items, including the aforementioned oatmeal (140-340 calories, minus sugar) and fruit salad (80 calories). I?d recommend you stick with one of these, or a piece of fresh fruit (banana or apple), where available. I do have to question the company?s claim that it has a lot of ?smart choices? and it?s possible to ?eat sensibly? just because some foods contain under 350 calories.
On the bright side, Starbucks? recent acquisition of ?Evolution Fresh (cold-pressed juice) is an encouraging sign the chain is taking the healthy high road. Won?t you join me by requesting the company serve more nutritious whole plant-based and organic foods and drinks, too?

Observations by the two of the European Space Agency's space observatories have provided a multi-wavelength view of the mysterious galaxy Centaurus A. The new images, from the Herschel Space Observatory and the XMM-Newton x-ray satellite, are revealing further hints about its cannibalistic past and energetic processes going on in its core.
At a distance of around 12 million light years, Centaurus A is the closest large elliptical galaxy to our own Milky Way. It has been marked as unusual since shortly after its discovery in the 19th century due to a thick lane of dust across its centre an unusual feature for an elliptical galaxy. But it wasn't until a century later that the galaxy's true nature was revealed.
Emanating from its core are two massive jets of material streaming from a massive black hole in the heart of Centaurus A. When observed by radio telescopes, the jets stretch for up to a million light years, though the Herschel and XMM-Newton results focus on the inner regions.
"Centaurus A is the closest example of a galaxy to us with massive jets from its central black hole," explained Prof Christine Wilson of McMaster University, Canada, who is leading the study of Centaurus A with Herschel. "Observations with Herschel, XMM-Newton and telescopes at many other wavelengths allow us to study their effects on the galaxy and its surroundings."
Strong radio emission is caused by electrons travelling at close to the speed of light through strong magnetic fields, and is so bright that the jets are even visible in the far-infrared images from the Herschel Space Observatory. As well as the jets, the images from this infrared observatory also show a twisted disc of dust near the galaxy's centre.
This odd shape is strong evidence that Centaurus A underwent a cosmic collision with another galaxy in the distant past. The colliding galaxy was ripped apart to form the warped disc, and the formation of young stars heats the dust to cause the infrared glow seen by Herschel.
Such collisions often result in shells and rings of gas and dust, and Centaurus A is no exception. Herschel observations have now confirmed the presence of two clumps of dust that seem to be lined up with the two lobes of the jets.
"The apparent alignment of two clumps with the two jets now seems to be a cosmic coincidence, and it appears that the dust originated from one of the colliding galaxies." explained Dr Robbie Auld, of Cardiff University. "Unlike most dust Herschel sees, which is heated by nearby star formation, the dust in these clumps is being heated by old stars in Centaurus A itself, up to 50,000 light years away."
In x-rays the effect of the two jets of material is clearly visible. Showing the presence of extremely hot gas, the images from the XMM-Newton x-ray satellite clearly show the axis of the one of the jets. While the other jet itself is not seen in by XMM-Newton, the gas it is ploughing into is shocked and heated to very high temperatures, creating a bright x-ray glow.
"XMM-Newton is the observatory most suited to detecting extended weak X-ray emission, often allowing us to see halos around galaxies for the first time," notes Norbert Schartel, XMM-Newton Project Scientist.
In the centre of the galaxy, the massive black hole is also having an effect on its immediate surroundings. The material around it glows brightly in x-rays, but there Herschel has identified an apparent deficit of dust within a few thousand light years of the black hole.
"This could be due to intense x-rays destroying the tiny dust grains, or due to the way the warped ring of dust is affecting star formation" said Prof Wilson. "Either way, Centaurus A is the ideal place to study the extreme processes that occur near super-massive black holes".
