Bodybuilding head promises good show | Body Health & Fitness

ST JOHN?S, Antigua ? The absence of national bodybuilding champion, Ollyn Martin, from this year?s LIME National Bodybuilding Figure Championships has opened the gates for a new champion and according to president of the Bodybuilding and Weightlifting Federation, Sonia Allred, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Allred, during an interview with OBSERVER Sports yesterday, disagreed with the notion that Martin?s withdrawal from Saturday night?s competition is anti-climatic and said it will serve to make the competition even more interesting.

?There are so many other bodybuilders out there who have worked so hard for 10 years and more, and I think it gives them a little chance,? she said.

?For years Ollyn has competed against Steve and they all competed against Steve, and then they get disappointed; but now you have Ollyn and Steve out, so it gives them a chance now to have a new Mr Antigua. I think it?s kind of exciting actually.?

Martin announced last week he would not be taking part in the competition this year after doctors advised him against competing due to a torn muscle in his triceps.

The competition, according to Allred, still has a lot to offer; one of which is the introduction of a new category.

?We have a new class this year which is Mr Physique where you can?t be muscular like a bodybuilder, but you have to be well put together, I should say, and not too much muscle,? the president said.

?If you have too much muscle, you lose points and we have four registered for that right now. They will wear the surfer shorts that come down to their knee, no shirt, and they come out on stage, do two turns, walk properly and one of the people going into that category is Apple Boy.?

The competition, which is slated for the Simon Bolivar Auditorium on Saturday night, is being sponsored by LIME for the second straight year.

LIME, through Corporate Communications Manager, Paula C Lee, expressed delight with being associated with the competition once more.

?Bodybuilding is new to LIME and this is only our second year of sponsorship; but as I was discussing bodybuilding with Sonia Allred, the president of the association, and some of the participants, I have come to realise that the event is more than well-toned bodies on display,? Lee said.

?It is a reminder that we are custodians of bodies that require healthy food, regular exercise, and skin care. So LIME?s sponsorship of bodybuilding is our way of contributing to the development of the sport and also motivating the public to practice healthy habits and increase the probability of living a longer and more fulfilling life.?

A total of 14 bodybuilders, 12 female figure competitors and four male physique participants have registered to date for the 8 pm show. Admission is $45.
