Bouldering Exercising the Upper Body | ABC Article Directory

Pull ups are one of the most popular ways to build the upper body, but, seriously, who has the time? Nobody wants to hang around doing pull ups in their spare time; for one it is boring and for two, well, actually it is just boring.

Luckily there is a sport that will utilize the power of pull ups and integrate it into an enjoyable form of recreation, bouldering. Bouldering is a lot like rock climbing, but instead of harnessing yourself to a rope and scaling a mountain you simply find a small boulder and traverse it.

Traversing a boulder means to work side to side, this may not seem like it is much different from regular sport climbing but it really is. In sport climbing you have to learn to use your legs to propel yourself up a mountain, which is great and your arms will still, no doubt, be tired at the end.

But in bouldering you are working side to side, so you never really move without pulling and pushing with your arms. The legs are more used to balance and coordinate rather than propel.

This is why bouldering is the ultimate for upper body building. It is interesting to take note of which muscle become sore after each climb, guaranteed it will be slightly different muscles every single time.

Of course there will be the expected sore muscles the forearms, the deltoids, the pectorals, the trapezoids, pretty much all the upper body will be completely exhausted after a good climb. Because you are using your legs and maintaining intricate positions on the wall you will start to notice your core is being developed too.

Any time you have to maintain a position: freezing in a place, balancing, crimping your body close to a stone, the abdomen is working hard to keep your spine and body in line. The main purpose of the abdomen is not to bend the spine in a crunch type maneuver but rather to keep it stabilized.

While you are swinging from hold to hold and rock to rock you are going to have to keep your body stabilized and in control otherwise you are going to flop right onto the ground. Climbing really is a whole body workout, but it put the main emphasis on the upper body.

So if you are looking to develop some good hearty forearm and upper body then you better find yourself a boulder and start working it. Otherwise you are going to have to do boring old pull ups.
